The Department of Life and Physical Sciences Department at Fisk University is seeking a full-time Chemistry Laboratory Manager/Laboratory Instructor in General/Organic Chemistry for appointment on or after January 5, 2021. This is a full-time, 12- month position. The University invites applicants and nominations. Applicants must demonstrate an interest and high level of competence in laboratory instruction and management.

 

STARTING DATE: January 5, 2021

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Laboratory Manager/Laboratory Instructor in General/Organic Chemistry is responsible for teaching two sections each semester of General/Organic Chemistry laboratories, managing the Chemical Stockroom, managing the Discipline of Chemistry inventory of chemicals, managing the Discipline of Chemistry laboratory equipment and ensuring Discipline of Chemistry compliance with applicable Environmental Health and Safety regulations. The Laboratory Manager reports to the Discipline of Chemistry Coordinator and the Chair of the Department of Life and Physical Sciences.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Teaching two sections each semester of General Chemistry laboratories under the direction of Instructor for General Chemistry Lecture.
  2. Supporting the teaching of Organic Chemistry laboratories under the direction of the Instructor for Organic Chemistry.
  3. Supporting the teaching of the Analytical Chemistry laboratory under the direction of the Instructor for Analytical Chemistry.
  4. Discipline-wide roles, including managing the Chemical Stockroom, managing the Discipline of Chemistry inventory of chemicals, overseeing and assuring updated service, as necessary, for laboratory equipment used in teaching chemistry laboratories.
  5. Ensuring Discipline of Chemistry compliance with applicable Environmental Health and Safety regulations. [ In cooperation with the Institutional Individual responsible for chemical, biological and environmental health and safety.]

 

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field and three years of experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Possess the ability to function independently and effectively resolve problems, meet deadlines, and produce quality work with attention to detail.
  • Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with departmental faculty, students, and other personnel on campus.
  • Be highly organized; Possess strong computer skills in using Word and Excel. 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Master's Degree in chemistry is preferred.
  • Additional experience in lab safety training highly desired.
  • Previous teaching experience is preferred.
