The Business Applications unit within University Relations seeks a
Data Scientist to join its team of data analysts and application
developers. The Data Scientist will work to support
Advancement operations for the University of Maryland, which
includes development (fundraising), alumni and donor relations,
gift processing, and other functions. This individual will
play a key role in enabling Advancement business users to make
data-informed decisions that will help the university reach its
capital campaign goals.
The Data Scientist will manipulate and analyze advancement datasets to reach meaningful data driven conclusions or discoveries. Working closely with business stakeholders to understand their goals and data dependencies, the Data Scientist will identify, investigate, and analyze appropriate data. They will apply appropriate models, algorithms and/or machine learning techniques to reach desired results. Some examples include working to identify prospects who should be contacted for a fundraising opportunity, or utilizing a decision tree to identify the appropriate capacity/affinity rating for prospects. The Data Scientist will support internal data wrangling and ETL pipelines to improve the quality of Advancement data and data insights.
The Data Scientist will use descriptive analytics to identify bottlenecks or areas of improvement, and in collaboration with awesome front-end developers, narrate a visual story for relevant metrics and KPIs. They will also use online advancement data stores to benchmark against comparable higher education institutions. Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):
Bachelor’s degree required.
Experience:
Candidates must have at least 5 years of experience using Python for data analysis, machine learning, data wrangling and/or AI. Experience working in relational databases (SQL) and data analysis tools is also required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The ideal candidate is someone who is curious, methodical and a critical thinker. We are looking for someone who can grow on the job by continuously learning new things, and brainstorming ideas for how to improve current internal data processes and how to utilize innovative data technologies. The successful candidate must be someone who likes to communicate via concise writing and visual presentation of ideas, and who is excited about technology in general and data intelligence specifically.
