Art History and Studio Art Generalist

Posting Number: F000121
Department: Art & Design

Job Scope: Ohio Northern University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts in the Getty College of Arts & Sciences invites applications for a full-time non-tenure track 4 year renewable contract appointment in Art History/Studio Art at the Instructor/Assistant Professor level, with the potential for summer teaching and support of creative work.

Principle Responsibilities: Primary teaching responsibilities include general survey lecture-based art courses and lower-level studio courses to art majors and non-majors as well as student advising, departmental and institutional service, and continued scholarly or creative activity.

Required Skills: The Art and Design program is searching for faculty to primarily teach undergraduate level art history survey courses (ART 2601, 2611), and general education visual literacy (ART 1651). The candidate should also be qualified to teach general, foundational studio courses. The successful candidate will teach within a dynamic school of visual and performing arts that encourages cross-disciplinary practice between art history, art practice and art education.

Minimum Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include a terminal degree in either Art History or Studio Art, and qualifications to teach in both areas. Preference will be given to candidates with a record of excellent teaching and mentoring at the baccalaureate level; strong communication skills; and commitment to a generalist, liberal arts based major program that includes an emphasis on broad education, capable writing, and high impact practices. Strong writing skills and an ability to direct and assess student writing is an asset.

Preferred Qualifications: Master of Fine Arts degree or Ph.D. in Art History, Visual Culture or related field with considerable experience teaching art history and studio art at the university level; a clear demonstration of artistic and/or scholarly achievement, as evidenced by a significant portfolio of creative work with research interests; familiarity with emerging areas of artistic practice and theory; ability to read and write at a high level and successfully direct and assess student writing; ability to break down texts and make them accessible to an undergraduate student audience.
