JOB SUMMARY:

Clemson University's Department of Automotive Engineering is looking for a Research Associate to fulfill the following duties:
  • Support the research and educational mission of the Department of Automotive Engineering located at the CU-ICAR Campus in Greenville, SC by providing technical, and laboratory operations supports.
  • Operates under the guidance of the Lab Coordinator and/or Department Chair.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


JOB DUTIES:

40% - Essential - Testing Support: Operates complex automotive research and test equipment in support of research projects and industrial client requests. Performs instrumentation and data acquisition testing setups for dynamic and NVH testing. Supports teaching (academic) labs, funded research projects, and engineering and testing services provided to outside companies. Provides validated data to faculty, students, researchers, and industry partners. Performs preventative and corrective maintenance on testing and research equipment. Assists with the implementation of additions and modifications to laboratory infrastructure and utilities as required to meet research and testing requirements.

25% - Essential - Safety Coordinator: Serve as primary Departmental Safety Coordinator (DSC) for Automotive Engineering performing duties as outlined by Occupational and Environmental Safety (OES) including laboratory safety oversight. Maintain medical equipment and supplies. Act as coordinator for departmental Safety Committee monthly meetings. Serves as backup hazardous waste coordinator.

20% - Essential - Administrative & Lab Management: Oversee asset and equipment management for the Automotive Engineering department, working in coordination with CU Accounting Services. Oversee departmental vehicle fleet, including mileage logs, maintenance, and records, and coordinating annual insurance coverage with CU Risk Management. Maintain laboratory organization and upkeep, including setting up and closing out labs with proper documentation.

15% - Essential - General Support: Assist faculty and students in support of research and academic laboratory activities, including the safe operation of shop and laboratory equipment. Assists with the development and operation of student classroom labs. Provide input as needed in the development of technical research proposals. Provide support and guidance to the Deep Orange (student vehicle prototyping) program. Provide assistance in preparing for lab tours and events, including moving vehicles, staging of equipment, and other items as directed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education - Associate's Degree or other technical certifications

Licenses - Drivers License Class D normal
Certifications - Must be willing to become first-aid/CPR certified

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, or other technical fields; First-aid/CPR certified, Forklift operation, crane operation (up to 20-ton); Work Exp 3+ years.
