Job Description:

Dean College's School of Liberal Arts is looking for a dynamic, experienced, student-centered educator to teach Genetics and You during the spring semester. The College seeks Adjunct Faculty who focus on experiential learning and active engagement in their classrooms. Adjuncts chosen to teach at Dean create a compelling and professional learning environment for students of diverse learning backgrounds.

We are seeking an adjunct instructor for BIO-176: Genetics and You. BIO-176 is a 3-credit class that meets for 2.5 hours/week.  The adjunct pay rate is $3,200/section. Adjunct faculty are expected to hold one office hour each week for each section they teach. The Biology program provides a course charter with course objectives as well as sample syllabi. All faculty will be expected to make active use of the learning management system at least at a minimum level established by the college.

The course description is as follows:

This course is intended to give students basic exposure to some of the current topics of scientific interest and contemporary relevance in human genetics. After establishing a foundation in genetic principles, the content of this course will range from concepts, such as genetics and race/ethnicity and gender; issues of predictive genetic testing; DNA-based forensics to identify specific individuals; human cloning for reproductive and therapeutic purposed; and current medical genetics cases. Readings will be from the scientific, medical literature, and news reports.

There is one BIO-176 section available. This course will be taught in person and is scheduled to meet Monday/Wednesday/Friday, 9:05 - 9:55 a.m.

Requirements:

  • A Master's Degree in Biology, or a related field, required;
  • A PhD. in a related discipline, preferred;
  • Experience teaching at the college level both in person and online, required;
  • Experience teaching first and second year undergraduates, preferred;
  • Strong computer skills, required;
  • Ability and willingness to be responsive and supportive to students through college online resources and digital tools, required;
  • Experience with or willingness to learn Canvas, our learning management system, and classroom media, required;
  • Expertise in learner-centered teaching, required;
  • Experience using technologies and/or strategies to enhance pedagogy, required;
  • Experience and ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse student body with a variety of learning styles, required;
  • COVID-19 Vaccination, required.
