SUMMARY STATEMENT

The Network Administrator provides network troubleshooting and repair to the Network Infrastructure, Network software, Servers, Switches, Routers and Firewall. Responsibilities may include installation, setup, monitoring and testing of networking system software and hardware to ensure network performance meets college and user requirements.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

A. Install, maintain and support Network Servers.

1. Monitor daily all Servers for storage requirements, file placement, and mapping.

2. Review Server system logs for performance issues.

3. The installation and downloading of patches for the various Operating Systems considered to be enterprise wide including

Windows, Linux, Firmware, etc. and installation.

4. The installation and monitoring of centralized backup processes for all servers, attached storage, and intermediate local area network servers connected to the network.

5. The installation and maintenance of various third party network-based software products and assist staff in utilizing them.

6. The preparation and documentation of procedures, utilities, and custom configurations to allow other technical support staff, data communications staff, and the Help Desk staff to diagnose, and correct reoccurring problems.


B. Install, maintain, and support Network infrastructure.

1. Identify and verify network connectivity problems and communications links.

2. Monitor network traffic to the various buildings and network closets.

3. Anticipate communication and networking problems and implement preventive measures.

4. Installation of switches, routers, wireless access points and other networking equipment.

5. Investigate user problems, identify their source, determine possible solutions, test and implement solutions.

6. Ensure timely user notification of maintenance requirements and effects on system availability.

7. Investigate, recommend and install enhancements and operating procedures that optimize network availability.

8. Support Fiber Channel storage, and interconnect servers to SANs.

9. Support various SANs and NASs in environment.

10. Plan and implement network security, including building firewalls, applying cryptography to network applications, managing host security, file permissions, backup and disaster recovery plans, file system integrity, and adding and deleting users.

11. Perform other tasks as assigned by the IT Director.

 


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Associate degree in computer science with emphasis on Networking or equivalent experience. Ideally should have 3-5 year experience, similar in nature to HCC environment.


SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Working knowledge of the UNIX, Linux and Windows Operating System’s and familiarity with a variety of subsidiary support systems. Working knowledge of Active Directory, Office 365 and Azure cloud services. Working knowledge of VMWare ESXi, and Citrix Xen Server virtualization. Working knowledge of routing, TCP/IP, various network protocols, wireless access points, and RF mapping. Working knowledge of antispam email firewall. Preferred knowledge of Alcatel-Lucent PBX phone systems or equivalent. Must have the ability and desire to solve problems and work in a highly technical environment. Must be detailed oriented and possess good technical writing skills. Needs to be experimental and have the ability to make knowledge transfer to peers and associates concerning new software.
