The Johns Hopkins Medicine Technology Innovation Center (TIC) is seeking aDesign Specialist -Health IT UI/UX (Website Designer) who will participate as part of a design team at TIC. The Technology Innovation Center (TIC) is uniquely positioned within Johns Hopkins to help design, build, and deploy novel clinical applications that strive to improve workflow, outcomes, and patient experience. The applications the TIC designs, builds, and supports are critical to health system and university operations.

Our applications focus on turning data and algorithms into useful visualization tools, improving workflows such as patient hand-off, rounding, and cross-team collaboration, and helping patients with medication adherence, data gathering, and overall education. Our team frequently works with data from multiple sources including our Enterprise EMR (Epic), researcher curated data, and other IT systems.

Technology Innovation Center

The Design Specialist will participate as part of a design team at the Johns Hopkins Medicine Technology Innovation Center (TIC). The Technology Innovation Center (TIC) is uniquely positioned within Johns Hopkins to help design, build, and deploy novel clinical applications that strive to improve workflow, outcomes, and patient experience. The applications the TIC designs, builds, and supports are critical to health system and university operations. Our applications focus on turning data and algorithms into useful visualization tools, improving workflows such as patient hand-off, rounding, and cross-team collaboration, and helping patients with medication adherence, data gathering, and overall education. Our team frequently works with data from multiple sources including our Enterprise EMR (Epic), researcher curated data, and other IT systems.

Health IT

The Design Specialist will primarily collaborate with the Health IT team. The Health IT team is responsible for implementing, maintaining, enhancing and upgrading the Epic system, MyChart (the Epic patient portal) and the large number of clinical and administrative applications that are being utilized across the JHM enterprise. Central IT supports the Epic hardware/data center, advises and oversees security, handles Disaster Recovery and ensures that the technical infrastructure supports the system. The team provides technical solutions and tools that help JHM provide the highest quality patient health care in the treatment and prevention of human illness.

Design Specialist Requirements

  • Maintains a strong portfolio showcasing user research and UI/UX work for web and mobile
  • Knows the entire Adobe Creative Suite well, with excellence in one or more program
  • Is comfortable working with Adobe XD or Figma for prototyping
  • Has worked on several multi-person projects, with developers and project managers, and is familiar with the concept of ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’
  • Is comfortable applying design principles to technical projects
  • Has worked on multi-stakeholder projects, leveraging a user-centered approach to gathering insights and requirements and applying them successfully to user interface designs
  • Possesses a working knowledge of front-end languages or a willingness to learn them
  • Has implemented UI/UX design improvements within the constraints of a vended solution before
  • Has experience with designing to fit existing branding/styles while creatively applying those styles to existing software applications
  • A design degree from an accredited university and a high GPA can be used in lieu of work experience

Focus and Responsibilities of this Position

The responsibilities of the Design Specialist – Health IT UI/UX and design research include applying a user-centered design process and producing designs or recommendations for patient and clinician-facing applications.

This position supports and leads team and individual projects assigned to the design team as part of the work of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Technology Innovation Center. Projects span health system and enterprise technology. The Design Specialist should be skilled in user experience design with a track record of applying a design research and user-centered design process to multi-stakeholder projects. A successful candidate should grasp the complexities of current healthcare IT systems and requirements while balancing the needs of end users.

The Design Specialist will participate as part of the design team at the Johns Hopkins Medicine Technology Innovation Center. TIC design team members provide expertise in design research, content, marketing, user experience, visual design, and front-end development. Additionally, this position will work closely with Health IT (HIT) teams, especially the MyChart, Scheduling and Billing Epic application teams, the Patient Experience architect, and the JHM Marketing and Communications team. With a focus on providing patients secure access to their medical records and expands patient engagement, these teams deploy intuitive tools for reviewing prior visits, lab results and medications, scheduling future appointments, completing payments, and more. The team is looking for a talented individual with specific expertise that compliments these competencies. This individual must also be willing to learn and participate in existing team competencies.
