Senior Associate Director of Development

General Description:

The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS) seeks a skilled and experienced major gift officer to join our team in achieving our annual, major, and planned giving program objectives. Reporting to the Senior Director of Development, the Senior Associate Director of Development is an integral member of the School’s Office of External Affairs team in our effort to secure philanthropic support for the Krieger School’s mission of education, research, and discovery. Our team is dedicated to connecting the passions of our donors to the needs of the School to realize our mission.

The Senior Associate Director of Development will be responsible for identifying and cultivating relationships with prospective major and planned giving donors. This involves prospect research and developing effective solicitation strategies as well as stewarding donors throughout the major giving process. The Senior Associate Director of Development will maintain a donor portfolio with a focus on gifts of $100,000 and above. The position will be focused on a designated territory within the United States. In addition, the Senior Associate Director of Development will manage a KSAS volunteer council and may have managerial responsibilities of other gift officers.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a major gift prospect pool of alumni and other key constituents in the U.S. for major and planned gifts.
  • Plan and execute solicitation strategies leading to major gifts; contact alumni extensively throughout the territory to pursue these strategies and build enduring relationships, completing 125-150 virtual and in-person visits per year.
  • Prepare proposals, solicitation letters, gift agreements and other development materials for prospects and donors that articulate Johns Hopkins University’s needs, values, and ambitions. Communicate with major prospects and donors about specific ways to give, both current and deferred, to maximize gift and tax benefits.
  • Build and manage a portfolio of 100-125 prospects with the capacity to make major gifts.
  • Develop annual fundraising goals and objectives in consultation with KSAS leadership; create a development plan to research and identify new prospects, make discovery calls, and build a prospect pool based on new prospects and past donors.
  • Management of the Humanities Council, a volunteer committee that meets twice a year. Responsibilities include serving as main liaison to associated faculty and leadership, develop agendas, talking points, and briefings, as well as solicit Council annual gifts.
  • Dependent on experience, management of a small team of gift officers, providing direct supervision, training, and guidance.
  • Build a strong network of collegial partnerships with development and departmental representatives in areas across campus.
  • Partner with the KSAS constituent engagement team to ensure event attendance in assigned territory, as well as recruit and support key volunteers who could assist in the School’s advancement efforts (i.e. mentoring, panel presentation, lectures, etc…). Attend events when needed.
  • Serve as liaison with selected academic departments, centers and programs. Work with the chair or director to determine fundraising opportunities for the department, center, or program. Develop excellent relations with faculty leaders and department chairs in support of KSAS priorities.
  • Seek and participate in opportunities to raise the profile of the School.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Five years related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One to two years of management experience.
  • Ability to work in an environment that puts a strong emphasis on metrics and success.
  • Ability to work independently; ability to work as part of a team; manage projects; determine priorities; and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Comfortable working in a complex, multi-divisional , and fast-paced organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills, and demonstrated effective writing, and editorial, skills.
  • Strong organizational skills required and ability to manage more than one project simultaneously.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently. Current specific territory includes FL, VA, NYC with additional travel when needed.
  • Strong computer literacy skills required and the ability to learn new software.
  • Must possess valid driver’s license and be able to travel.
  • Must be able to work on the Homewood campus in 2+ days per week and remotely the balance of time.
