Position Purpose

To provide leadership in the development and establishment of evolving best practices in evaluation and assessment for Geisel’s education programs, including its flagship Undergraduate Medical Education ( UME ) and Masters in Public Health ( MPH ) Programs, and for the associated contributing faculty at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. The Associate Dean for Evaluation and Assessment ( ADEA ) is responsible for tracking national/international trends and innovations in evaluation and assessment approaches, for effectively implementing assessment policies, procedures, and practices within the UME, MPH, and other Geisel-sponsored education programs. The position has further responsibility, in collaboration with the appropriate curriculum committees (e.g., UME - Medical Education Committee ( MEC ), MPH Curriculum Committee, etc.) for for ensuring that Geisel’s education programs remain fully compliant with applicable LCME, CEPH and other applicable accreditation standards concerning assessment and evaluation. Primary work consists of oversight of learner and course assessment(s) and program evaluation, and the continued improvement of the curriculum for Geisel education programs. Partners with Department of Medical Education and other relevant Geisel faculty to facilitate research and scholarship efforts requiring assessment and evaluation data and analysis as applicable to pedagogical studies related to Geisel education programs, and in alignment with institutional priorities. The ADEA reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education ( SADME ) and works closely the Executive Director of Education Programs within The Dartmouth Institute ( EDEP - TDI ), and with other UME associate deans, the curriculum committee chairs,, the Chair of the Department of Medical Education, course and clerkship directors, and Geisel’s curriculum committees.

*6+ years experience in leading institutional efforts in curricular assessment and evaluation of education programs.
*Demonstrated record of excellence and knowledge of learner assessment strategies and curriculum evaluation
*Demonstrated record of excellence in the development of assessment tools and strategies
*Commitment to keeping informed of best practices in evaluation and assessment strategies
*Commitment to support, contribute to and strengthen a vibrant, culturally diverse, and inclusive learning community of students, faculty and fellow professionals.
*Experience working with faculty and staff at a local, regional, and national level on assessment and evaluation
*Supervisory and budgetary experience
*Excellent organizational skills and ability to plan and prioritize work independently
*Excellent computer skills and knowledge of a variety of software applications and central systems
*High degree of initiative, tact, and diplomacy
*Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective interaction with diverse groups and individuals
*Good judgment to handle sensitive and confidential matter

Description

Program Evaluation

*Provides subject matter expertise and leadership to support faculty and staff involved with all aspects of evaluation of Geisel’s education programs (e.g. UME, MPH ), as pertains to assessing learner outcomes and evaluation of program effectiveness.
*Works with the MEC and other Geisel curriculum committees to establish outcome measures for the curriculum and develop data systems and analytical models to assess and document the effectiveness of teaching and learning models.
*Provides subject matter expertise and leadership in support of faculty research in the areas of medical education effectiveness and pedagogical innovation.
*Consults with appropriate associate deans and teaching faculty, in collaboration with the SADME and the EDEP - TDI, as well as the chairs of Geisel’s curriculum committees, to ensure timely and constructive feedback on various aspects of curricular changes, course delivery, and of Geisel’s education programs, more broadly.
*In collaboration with the SADME and EDEP - TDI, provides oversight for the delivery, analysis and reporting of student feedback on AAMC and other educational program surveys to intuitional stakeholders and partners.
*Maintains documentation of program evaluation outcomes for reports to internal and external stakeholders.

Student Assessment

*Oversees all aspects of the UME and MPH evaluation and assessment program(s), and provides day-to-day supervision and oversight for the Director of Evaluation and Assessment.
*Works with the Director of Evaluation and Assessment, UME curricular deans and course leaders, EDEP - TDI and course leaders, and teaching faculty to develop and execute assessment plans for the curriculum at Geisel.
*Supports development of assessment instruments and regularly evaluates practices within the UME and MPH programs, recommending changes as needed.
*Maintains a comprehensive system of assessment data management and reporting through institutional platform(s).
*Provides oversight for the delivery, analysis, and reporting of all internal and external student assessments.
*Analyzes learning assessment data to ensure reliability and validity.
*Maintains documentation of student learning assessment outcomes for reports to internal and external stakeholders.

Leadership

*Provides leadership and supervision of the Assessment and Evaluation team at Geisel, including the Director of Evaluation and Assessment, the Assessment Coordinators
*Provides leadership and guidance for evaluation and assessment research and scholarship
*Provides strategic oversight of team functions, in alignment with institutional priorities.
*Maintains currency in best practices for data collection and analysis techniques to ensure all programmatic standards are met, addressing program deficiencies in data collection and instrumentation.
*Works collaboratively with the Associate Deans of Curriculum and Geisel’s teaching faculty to contribute to evolving standards for the assessment of clinical skills and other required competencies for Geisel’s education programs.
*Provides leadership and works collaboratively with the Continuous Quality Improvement ( CQI ) team to help guide program development in response to student outcomes, program evaluations and the medical school’s strategic plan.
*Serves as an ex-officio member of the Medical Education Committee ( MEC ) and serves as chair of its standing subcommittee, the Geisel Assessment Oversight Committee.

Accreditation

*Works in collaboration with the Director of ( LCME ) Accreditation and Kern Programs, the Director of Assessment and Evaluation and TDI’s Director of Academic Affairs to ensure compliance with LCME and CEPH regulations for student assessment, and serves as the lead in preparing reports for accrediting agencies and internal stakeholders in coordination with UME and MPH program faculty and staff leadership.
*In collaboration with the Director of Evaluation and Assessment, other UME associate deans, TDI’s Director of Academic Affairs, and Geisel teaching faculty, provides guidance for the development of curriculum and examination question mapping to assure that program goals and objectives are adequately tracked, taught, and evaluated.

Educational Research and Scholarship

*Collaborates with Department of Medical Education and other Geisel teaching faculty on the impact of educational innovations and longitudinal curriculum outcomes and contributes to educational research and scholarship.
*Supports research and scholarly activities of Department of Medical Education and other Geisel teaching faculty through the provision of summary assessment and evaluation data across the UME and other Geisel curricula.

Faculty Development

*Works with the Chair of the Department of Medical Education, The Dartmouth Institute, and, when relevant, the Geisel Office of Faculty Affairs and Dartmouth-Hitchcock clinical departments in the development and implementation of faculty development programs for Geisel teaching faculty focused on assessment and evaluation.
