Job Summary/Basic Function

Millersville University invites nominations and applications for a dynamic and creative leader to become the next Dean of the College of Science and Technology. This position offers an exciting opportunity for collaboration with college students, faculty, and staff to navigate through this transformative period in higher education. We seek an individual committed to the ideals of a liberal arts education in a public university and whose principles align with the University’s mission and EPPIIC values of Exploration, Professionalism, Public Mission, Inclusion, Integrity, and Compassion.

The Dean provides academic and administrative leadership, direction, and support for instructional, research, and professional activities of the faculty in the Departments of Applied Engineering, Safety & Technology; Biology; Chemistry; Computer Science; Geography; Earth Sciences; Mathematics; and Physics; the Wehrheim School of Nursing; and the Center for Disaster Research and Education. The Dean is directly responsible to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for the overall operations of the College.

The Dean serves as a strong advocate for the College of Science and Technology and has an academic vision that includes both encouraging student-centered learning in a liberal arts tradition and facilitating development of new and innovative initiatives within the College. The Dean encourages and supports cooperative efforts within the College and the University and with external organizations throughout the Lancaster community and Pennsylvania. Effective and persuasive communication with campus constituents and external audiences is essential.

The Dean’s responsibilities involve many diverse areas and stakeholders, and include offering strategic leadership for the College, overseeing daily operations of the College and supervising the academic programs, collaborating with numerous University administrative offices, representing the College at University and community functions, and interacting with students, faculty, alumni, and community leaders.

Required Qualifications
  • An earned doctorate in any of the disciplines in the College of Science and Technology or a related field and a distinguished record of teaching, scholarship, and service commensurate with appointment as Professor in a Department in the College.
  • A demonstrated record of increasing responsibility and authority through a minimum of five years of successful academic leadership at the level of department chair or above.
  • An established record of working with diverse staff, faculty, and students, along with demonstrated success with respect to diversity, equity, and inclusion in areas of hiring, promotion, and retention.
  • A record of developing and implementing innovative policies and programs that foster excellence in teaching, research, and service in higher education.
  • A record of initiatives and activities that promote recruitment and retention of students from broad backgrounds, including underserved populations.
  • Experience relating to external constituencies such as public/government agencies, funding agencies, industry, alumni, and donors, including a focus on garnering philanthropic, corporate, and grant support.
  • An understanding of shared governance and demonstrated commitment to maintaining a collaborative culture on campus.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrable experience in developing, retaining, and evaluating faculty and professional staff.
  • Demonstrated record of excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills including the ability to motivate faculty and staff in cooperative efforts to support the University strategic vision.
  • Evidence of active contributions to university or divisional strategic planning.
  • Knowledge of system-wide goals and the interest and skill to contribute to their development and implementation.
  • Record of technological skills suitable for navigating software and systems needed to support university functions and programs.
