Position description
The Writing Program in the University of California San Diego's Literature Department invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in creative nonfiction with a specialization in the field of eco-writing. Writers whose work takes the form of essay, memoir, environmental reportage, environmental humanities, and/or documentary screenwriting, and writing that engages in political, cultural, and ethical issues around ecology, mapping, climate change, contagion, and speculative and sustainable futures and environments from both local and global perspectives, are encouraged to apply. Candidates with additional expertise in any of the following areas would be especially welcome to apply: the history of writing technologies, computer science, electronic and general science writing, documentary aesthetics, Native American and/or indigenous studies, critical race, gender, border, and/or disability studies, and visual culture and film studies.

UCSD has a unique relationship to the field of eco-poetics, border cultural production, and situated practice: It has produced a distinguished alumni community of cross-genre experimental creative writers. It hosts the Clarke Center for the Human Imagination and the Summer Clarion Writers' Workshop. It has taken the lead in computer science and environmental engineering. Writers and artists associated with the program and the university have focused in their work on the specificity of UCSD's location in the Mexican-US borderlands and on the Pacific coast. Across the Arts and Humanities division and inter-divisionally, there is strong interest in cross-media production, collaboration and community engagement. The department has inter-divisional ties with units like Ethnic Studies, Critical Gender Studies, and Communication.

We are looking for a colleague to participate in growing an innovative and exciting cross-genre MFA program, leading cross-genre workshops, developing courses and curriculum, mentoring across genres, collaborating in the graduate admissions process and helping to coordinate the New Writers Series of readings affiliated with the Literature Department, its MFA program and Writing section.

The typical teaching load is 2/2/0 and 2/2/1 in alternating years on the quarter system, in addition to thesis direction at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
The candidate must have an MFA degree in creative writing or related field and/or PhD degree in literature, cultural studies, or a related field by the time of the appointment
Preferred qualifications

• Demonstrated expertise and potential in multiple genres and creative writing pedagogy, with experience in literary publishing and working with first-generation college students, as well as MFA and PhD graduate students
• Given UCSD's unique location in the US-Mexico borderlands and on the Pacific coast, as well as our Literature Department's focus on comparative, multilingual, transdisciplinary, and transnational projects, an investment in the university's site-specificity is desirable. An additional attention to auto-theory and intermedial or transmedial practice in the candidate's work would be welcome
