 The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM), College of Engineering (COE), Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME), invites applicants for two full-time (9-month) tenure-track faculty positions, one as Assistant Professor and one as Associate/Full Professor, pending position clearance and availability of funds. The anticipated start date is August 1, 2022, or soon thereafter.


Positions: We encourage exceptional candidates to apply to the following two positions:

 Assistant Professor (Aerospace, Biomedical and/or Thermofluids) - Position #83283: We are seeking candidates with a strong research record in the areas of aerospace, biomedical engineering, and/or thermofluids to establish a world-class experimental, theoretical, or computational research program that will complement our rapidly expanding strengths in these areas.

 Associate/Full Professor (ME) - Position #85353: We are seeking candidates with research programs in any ME discipline with the expertise and skill set to provide leadership capacity within the ME Department and serve as department chair. Candidates in areas of Aerospace, Biomedical Engineering, and/or Thermofluids are specifically encouraged to apply.  Candidates are expected to maintain a world-class experimental, theoretical or computational research program. Applicants should hold an equivalent rank for which they are applying. The COE Dean may choose to appoint the successful candidate to an 11-month appointment as the department chair for up to a 3-year period, annually renewable at the Dean’s discretion.


Duties: Applicants will be expected to develop externally funded research programs, to teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses, perform other faculty duties at UHM, and contribute to an inclusive and equitable campus environment. For position #85353, if appointed as chair, the applicant will be expected to develop a vision for leadership and contribute to the department’s national and international standing.


Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must hold an earned doctorate in mechanical engineering or a closely related field and have the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively. For position #85353, the applicant must have demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels; documented scholarly achievement; experience in securing extramural research funding; strong leadership skills; and established record of providing leadership to university faculty and staff.


Environment: UHM is a Carnegie R1 (highest research activity) university and a recognized Land, Sea, Space, and Sun Grant institution. The department currently has a core group of 17 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 18 cooperating and adjunct faculty, and approximately 380 undergraduate students and 50 graduate students.
