About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
Northeastern University invites applications and nominations for tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of data visualization. Senior candidates may also be considered. Ideal candidates will be accomplished designers and researchers in graphic/information design and data visualization with interest and expertise in data driven design processes. The areas of application of the candidate's practice may involve a broad range of topics including but not limited to: communication of social issues for awareness; health and environmental sciences; visual analytics; critical and speculative design; visualization studies on perception, cognition, interaction and experience; computer graphics and algorithms for visualization, or data-storytelling and semiotics. Appointment will be in the Department of Art + Design in the College of Arts, Media and Design (CAMD), joint with the Khoury College of Computer Sciences and/or the Network Science Institute (https://www.networkscienceinstitute.org); an alternative secondary college is possible, depending on the candidate's interest. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to participate in CAMD's Co-Lab for Data Impact (https://camd.northeastern.edu/research-scholarship-creative-practice/co-laboratory-for-data-impact/), the Khoury College data visualization group (https://visualization.khoury.northeastern.edu), and the NUVis Network (https://nuvis.northeastern.edu), and will have the opportunity to collaborate with entities within CAMD such as the Center for Design (https://camd.northeastern.edu/center-for-design/) and the Center for the Arts (https://camd.northeastern.edu/cfa/), as well as with entities beyond the College, including the Roux Institute (https://roux.northeastern.edu/research/) and the Institute for Experiential AI (https://ai.northeastern.edu).

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be able to teach a variety of classes in their area of expertise to undergraduate and graduate students. Responsibilities include: (a) mentoring students at all levels (e.g., serving on capstone and dissertation/thesis committees); (b) leading an active line of research and/or advancing scholarship on their creative practice; (c) teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in the primary and secondary units; and (d) providing service at the Department, College, and University levels.

Qualifications:
Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree by the appointment start date in design or informatics (e.g. planning and architecture, creative technology, new media, design research, human-computer interaction, human-centered design, computation, computer science, information science, data science), or related fields; must have expertise in computational visualization; and must have knowledge in one or more areas of design practice. Candidates must have a well-developed research agenda that will inform and advance current trends in the field through creative production, experimentation, collaboration, exhibition, and/or publication. Evidence of a high level of skill and accomplishment across media, and a sophisticated aesthetic sensibility is expected. Successful candidates will have or show potential for having a national and international record of excellence in their field, innovative research, substantive scholarship, and effective teaching, and be prepared to engage in research with faculty across other disciplines of our Colleges and University.

Candidates should have experience in, or a commitment to, working with diverse student populations in a culturally diverse work and educational environment.
