Assistant Professor of Art Education

The School of Visual Arts within the College of Arts and Architecture at Penn State University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Art Education. This is a full-time, tenure-line position with an anticipated start date of August 2022. The teaching load is four courses per year, typically as a two-course load each semester. Expectations include undergraduate advising, graduate mentoring, maintaining an active research agenda, and departmental and university service. A Ph.D. or Ed.D. is required at the time of appointment.

The School of Visual Arts (SoVA) offers a B.A. in Studio Art, B.F.A in Studio Art (with concentrations in Ceramics, Drawing and Painting, New Media, Sculpture, and Photography), a B.S. and Post-baccalaureate Certification in Art Education, and B. Des. in Digital Art and Multimedia Design and Professional Photography. SoVA also offers a B. Des in Digital Multimedia Design and a certificate in Digital Art through Penn State's World Campus. Graduate programs offer an M.F.A. in Art, and M.S. and Ph.D. in Art Education with M.S. and Ph.D. dual-title degrees in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and a Ph.D. dual-title degree in African American and Diaspora Studies. The Art Education program's current focus is on intersections among and transdisciplinary approaches to visual culture, childhood and youth studies, digital and mobile studies, feminist and critical pedagogies, critical race theory, histories of art education, curriculum studies, critical disability studies, environmental studies, cultural and diaspora studies, art teacher education, studio experience, arts-based research, and contemporary theories.

Required:
  • Demonstrated professional and scholarly activity through a developed research agenda that may include a record of peer-reviewed publications and a potential for securing external funding. Preference is given to applicants who demonstrate successful experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate art education students, and experience teaching in PreK-12 schools, community-based organizations, or cultural institutions.
  • Evidence of equitable considerations, awareness, and practice with regard to contemporary curricula development, inclusive practices in educating diverse student bodies and working with a diverse faculty and staff, along with evidence of working collectively to cultivate a culture that supports success and enables all members of a college community to thrive.


Preferred:
  • Demonstrated ability to balance a robust research agenda with teaching and service at the program, school, college and university levels, and contribute to the program's collective values of sensitivity to equity and inclusion and its mission of social responsibility.
