The Department of Neurology is seeking a Physician Assistant who is responsible for performing many patient-oriented tasks such as interviewing patients, taking medical histories, performing physical examinations, ordering laboratory tests, coordinating the continuum of care, providing education to patients and significant others, conducting clinic sessions, and prescribing appropriate treatments. May participates in research initiatives. Under the direction of a Physician group, this position supports Neuromuscular Providers with their outpatient clinical duties at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

The Physician Assistant will be working with the attending, and performs the functions of a mid-level provider to coordinate the care of patients and facilitate efficient and effective movement through the health care system. Screens and interviews patients, takes and records patient histories, and consults with physicians and other health care providers using an interdisciplinary approach to recommend a plan of care. Prescribes medications to patients as indicated. Provides consult services for inpatients and occasionally outpatients to determine need for intervention and discusses the results of consult with the attending Internist to determine optimal patient care path. Provides follow up patient care as needed in clinic.

Provides counseling and instruction to patients and their significant others regarding health conditions, therapies, and procedures. May make decisions regarding data gathering and appropriate management and treatment of patients being seen for the initial evaluation of a problem, or the follow-up evaluation of a previously diagnosed and stabilized condition. Initiates requests for laboratory studies and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Participates in the coordination of research projects including patient enrollment and manages the associated documentation. Develops policies and procedures as needed to facilitate optimal patient care and functions as a liaison to nursing. Proficient in use of EPICMeditech and EPR systems.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversees personal and provider Epic in-baskets triaging appropriately.
  • Pends new medications and prescription refills in Epic for physician signature.
  • Follows up on lab and study results, notifying the physician and patient as appropriate.
  • Returns patient phone calls. Prepares physicians for outpatient clinic appointments including obtaining detailed medical records for patients with complex medical histories and ensuring records are scanned into Epic.
  • Populates patient history in Epic.
  • Generates patient problem lists as requested by physicians.
  • Is aware of the inclusion/exclusion criteria for ongoing clinical trials to help identify possible research candidates.
  • Assist with preparing documents for infusion services, including pre-authorization documents for the physicians.

Scope of Responsibility:

  • Knows the key formal and informal goals of the division and the clinic team and asks for guidance appropriately.
  • Uses own judgment in achieving goals of good clinic practices, good documentation, and interactions with staff and health care professionals.
  • Practices nursing per clinical protocols and under the nursing scope of practice for the State of Maryland.
  • Provides primary nursing care to clinic patients.
  • Primary nursing care begins with the first encounter with the patient by phone or in clinical setting and continues throughout the course of care.
  • Primary nursing care constitutes independent collection of medical information, physical exam, and assessment of patient to discuss with supervisor, then completion of medical documentation and implementation of treatment plan.
  • Requires the analytical skills to collect information from diverse sources, apply professional principles in performing various analyses, and summarize the information and data in order to solve problems or design relatively complex systems and programs that cross department/divisional lines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body.
  • Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program.
  • Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
  • Experience may be considered in lieu of Bachelor's Degree.*
  • Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date. Six months of previous experience required.

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to analyze data to synthesize and summarize information and to make judgments regarding patient care.
  • Ability to use a computer keyboard to input and obtain data.
  • Ability to apply principles of evidenced-based practice, scientific process, and service excellence in practice.

Physical Requirements:

  • Stooping, bending, reaching, grasping objects, walking and/or standing for extended periods of time.
