Position Purpose

OPAL provides academic and sociocultural advising, designs and facilitates educational programs, and serves as advocates for all students and communities.

We are seeking a Program Coordinator for Community and Leadership who will serve the LatinX and LGBTQIA+ student communities and other communities as needed. As a critical member of the OPAL staff, our Program Coordinators for Community and Leadership Development are responsible for developing and overseeing the implementation of signature programs, providing opportunities for student leadership development, coordinating outreach, and facilitating educational trainings. Program Coordinators are generally focused on working with particular affinity communities or areas of oversight under the guidance and supervision of an OPAL Dean. These affinity communities and areas of oversight include: Black Students, Multicultural Education, International Students, Latinx Students, LGBTQIA+ Students, Pan-Asian Students, and Women & Gender. Many programs run during evenings and weekends, and work schedules will be arranged to accommodate irregular hours.

Bachelors plus 2-3 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Bachelor’s degree and two years’ relevant work experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong organizational skills for proficiently managing multiple projects.
  • Demonstrated experience working both independently and collaboratively.
  • Effective interpersonal skills for engaging students, faculty, and colleagues.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education and experience in Higher Education, Social Justice Education, Ethnic Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, or International Education, preferred.
  • Applicable experiences in working with and/or advocating on behalf of women, international, and/or first-generation students, students of color, LGBTQIA students, and/or under-served and under-represented student communities.

Program Coordination (60%)

• Under the guidance of an OPAL Dean, develops and oversees the implementation, marketing, delivery, and assessment of community-building, awareness-raising, mentorship, orientation, graduation, and personal development programs. Responsibilities may include program development, soliciting student involvement, facilitating group discussions, arranging speakers and performers, talking students through outcomes and decision-making, room-booking, budgeting, and facilitating student, faculty, and community partnerships.

Leadership Development (20%)

• Conducts leadership development trainings for student leaders, mentors, and committee participants, using a social justice lens.
• Develops, implements, and evaluates strategies for creating more collaborative, intersectional, and coherent processes for OPAL programs and events.
• Trains, supervises, and evaluates undergraduate student staff, where needed.

Description

Outreach and Education (20%)
• Creates electronic and print resources, outreach, and marketing materials. This may include updating website materials and using social networking platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, etc.
• Collaborates with OPAL staff to revise, update, and expand the curriculum of leadership development programs and initiatives.
• Connects and refers students to the appropriate OPAL Dean for 1-1 advising.
• Participates in the facilitation of cultural competency workshops offered throughout the year, as needed, including developing, coordinating, and delivering educational trainings primarily to undergraduate students. Topics could include identity, power, privilege, bias intervention, and dialoguing across difference. May include management of OPAL’s portfolio of educational trainings and OPAL’s diversity peer-educator program.
• Responsible for maintaining welcoming, tidy, functional spaces for the student communities that OPAL serves. May include management of OPAL’s student-centered spaces (such as the Student Resource Center, Cutter Shabazz, LALACS and Triangle House, PAC Room and Rainbow Room) and hiring, training, and supervising student building managers, communicating facility and maintenance requests to appropriate college personnel, and serving as the point-person to communities and organizations regarding their needs and use of the space.

Other Duties
• Collaborates with staff on OPAL -wide programs.
• Supports programs and initiatives within all OPAL affinity communities to advance social justice and social change, and to advance the cultural competency of students.
• Attends Dartmouth professional training programs and remains current in the field, and abreast of issues regarding diversity, especially issues facing OPAL affinity communities, and strategies for enhancing the quality of their matriculation.
• Represents OPAL and Dartmouth College at appropriate conferences and meetings.
• Works with Director on Special Projects.
