Position Purpose
Reporting to the Thayer Building Manager, the Mechanical Engineering Technician troubleshoots, tests, repairs, operates, and maintains lab mechanical equipment for the Thayer School of Engineering and the Geisel School of Medicine.

- Associates plus 5 plus years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Knowledge of electronic, electromechanical and digital equipment, research and laboratory equipment, including equipment construction, repair and use.
- Organizational skills to maintain spare parts inventory.
- Understanding of complex safety requirements with a wide range of laboratory equipment.
- Solid verbal and written communication skills for interaction with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and vendors.
- Ability to use appropriate test devices, read and understand technical literature.
- Solid understanding of electronics principles as they apply to related lab equipment.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to use computers and Microsoft Office tools. Ability to learn new software as necessary.
- Ability to meet deadlines; accomplish work in order of priority; professionally maintain composure and effectiveness under pressure and changing conditions.
- Ability to react very quickly to new duties and situations encountered on the job.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for interacting with a diverse group of students, staff, faculty and vendors.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical or electronic engineering.
- 10+ years’ experience.

Description
Troubleshoots, repairs and maintains Thayer and Geisel equipment
- Diagnoses lab equipment failure and make repairs, determining the most effective and proficient method: direct repair (completed by this position), manufacturer service, or replacement.
- Ensures compliance with all accrediting bodies, local, state, and federal regulations governing the safe operation and maintenance of equipment.
- Maintains and repairs Thayer’s DI water system, boilers, autoclaves, XRDs, diamond saws, furnaces, microscopes, and other complex equipment.
- Assists in the oversight of vendors and service contracts.

Instrument Room team
- Responds to requests from students, faculty and staff for issues of equipment, instruments, parts, software, etc.
- Advises on electronic design and on parts selection; provides suggestions for improved design and simplicity and reality checks; draws schematics to illustrate how units operate; and informs how to test to ensure procedures have been executed correctly.
- Answers questions about design, function, and appropriate use of equipment.
