Summary/Objective
This is a professional staff position that supports one or more sponsored research projects. Overall responsibilities include the following as assigned: data entry and cleaning; basic analysis activities; identification and synthesis of relevant literature and resources; site and project coordination; and additional project support as needed. This position will also contribute to the execution of research protocols (including but not limited to instrument development and data collection and management) and to the creation of publications, materials, grant deliverables, and proposals for a variety of audiences.
This position reports to Dr. Julie Baldwin (Research Faculty) and works under the direction of Dr. Julie Baldwin (Research Faculty) and Dr. John Eassey (Research Faculty). This position may supervise students, interns, and consultants, as well as collaborate with and oversee certain project-related research tasks assigned to the Research Associates.
This position is contingent upon external funding and requires the ability to travel domestically.
Essential Functions
- Research Project Support: Work with Dr. Baldwin, Dr. Eassey, and project teams to meet project goals and objectives and successfully complete deliverables. Build and maintain relationships with project team members and partners, facilitating collaboration as necessary. Coordinate and monitor project activities with project partners. Contribute to the creation of instruments, publications, materials, grant deliverables, and proposals. Collect, enter, clean, and managed data; create codebooks; and conduct basic analyses. May require learning new methods, techniques, and software. Recognize and identify issues with data collection, entry, management, and analysis and appropriately communicate with project supervisors. Participate in project activities as needed, including meetings, site visits, conferences, and seminars. Obtain, synthesize, and summarize large amounts of interdisciplinary information. Maintain and develop an understanding of emerging issues, trends, and best practices related to assigned projects by monitoring current research, legislation, policy, and other products. Execute the secure transmission and management of data. Ensure research project tasks and tasks are performed in a timely manner (according to timelines and deadlines) and with a high degree of quality.
- Professional Development: Maintain and continue to develop an understanding of emerging issues, trends, and best practices related to Dr. Baldwin’s research agenda by monitoring current research, legislation, policy, and other materials. Seek and engage in opportunities to enhance research skills and experience and subject matter expertise.
Supervisory Responsibility
- This position reports to Dr. Julie Baldwin (Research Professor). Based on currently funded projects, this position may also report to Dr. John Eassey and other senior research personnel.
- This position may oversee Research Associates, students, interns, and consultants.
- This position requires the ability to travel domestically and work both remotely and on campus, as well as at an office in Fairfax, VA for a project from 2022-2024.
- This position is externally funded. The continuation of this position is contingent on these funds being available.

- Master's degree or equivalent.
- 1-3 years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated excellence in writing, editing, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
- Experience working on externally funded projects.
- Experience working with a high degree of attention to detail in a project-driven environment, successfully planning for and meeting deadlines with high-quality product.
- Demonstrated strong research and analytical skills applied to criminological and criminal justice issues (broadly defined), including the ability to synthesize and summarize large amounts of information and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue.
- Excellent listening and communication (verbal and written) skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Master's degree would preferably be in criminology, criminal justice, statistics, public health, applied quantitative or social research, or a related field.
- 2-4 years of relevant experience.
- Understanding of research methods and statistical software packages such as SPSS or Stata.
- Experience with Tableau software.
- Ability to manage team members to execute collaborative assignments.
- Ability to thrive in a creative, fast-paced, collaborative, and
collegial environment:
- Work effectively and collaboratively with a diverse team and site partners on a variety of research projects.
- Understand and follow directives and procedures and move projects forward with a high degree of independence.
- Work under multiple tight deadlines, finding creative means of solving problems and working in a fast-paced environment.
- Work both independently and as part of a team with a proactive approach to work; ability to notice what needs to be done and develop a strategy for responding.
- Ability to develop and manage productive relationships with project staff, partners, contractors, and consultants.
