Position Summary
The Assistant Director (AD) has administrative responsibility for designated programs and services for the Office of Multicultural Student Services ( OMSS ). The AD will assist the Director in providing leadership on multicultural issues throughout the campus and regional community with an emphasis on serving the needs of African American/Black, Indigenous/American Indian, Hispanic/Latinx, Asian American, Hmoob, biracial, multi-ethnic, DACA, and undocumented students at UWL . The AD will focus on the advocacy, retention, and matriculation of underrepresented students. The AD will also support access to UWL in partnership with Admissions recruitment/scholarship efforts.
Description of College / Department / Program / Division / Unit
The primary role of the Division of Diversity and Inclusion is to ensure that diversity, in its many forms, is understood, respected, and valued. The Division advocates for access, equity, and inclusion while encouraging critical dialogue, thinking, and meaningful educational interactions on campus and in the community. The Division includes the following departments: Center for Transformative Justice, ACCESS Center, Diversity and Inclusion, Multicultural Student Services, Pride Center, Student Support Services, and Upward Bound, Equity and Affirmative Action,
Title IX, Institute for Social Justice.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree required in education, educational administration, student affairs administration, or related field/experience.
- A minimum of 5 years of demonstrated progressive experience in leadership development and/or organization development ability to supervise and train professional staff and student workers.
- A minimum of 2 years of demonstrated ability to supervise and train professional staff and student workers.
- A valid driver’s license, at least 25 years of age, and a clean driving record for our 15-passenger van policy.
- Demonstrated ability to work with low-income, first-generation, multicultural, and diverse students in an educational setting, preferably higher education.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Effective access and use of computers and technology with strong computer skills, including proficiency w/ MS Office applications.
- Work schedule requires evening and weekend work hours (12-8:00 p.m.) with overnight travel with student organizations.
- Ability to work cooperatively/effectively to develop key partnerships and services with various faculty, staff, and students throughout the campus community as well as with parents, families, school administrators, or other community partners.
- Demonstrated record of conducting the assessment, and/or evaluations of programs.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills
- Ability to initiate successful grant writing projects.
- Demonstrated budget experience
- Additional programs and training in the area of diversity for students and the campus community
- Demonstrated experience developing a comprehensive leadership program
- Ability to drive a vehicle or 15 passenger van
- May be required to lift between 15-50 lbs on occasion.
- Ability to move for extended periods of time as well as sitting.

- Create, develop, and deliver student leadership programs that enhance student development and personal growth that might also compliment the academic and campus climate of the university.
- Serve as a centralized information resource for the officers and advisors of the Multicultural Student Organizations.
- Enhance the existing comprehensive leadership programs for multicultural students in ways that recognize the continuous changing trends for students that still allow modifications and new directions.
- Provide support and advisement to student and organizational programming, including the facilitation of the Nuts-and-Bolts Officers Training, Multicultural Fall Leadership Development Weekend, President and Vice President Roundtable, Advisor’s Meetings, and Celebration of Accomplishments, as well as coordination of the OMSS Calendar of Events.
- Role model a sustainable dialogue which creates a leadership environment open to difficult conversation, collaboration, conflict resolution, and support that prepares students to take on new challenges that seek positive outcomes.
- Serve as an advisor to one of the Multicultural Student Organizations in the absence of an advisor, until new advisor appointed.
- Ensure appropriate unit representation at campus, local, state and professional meetings in the Director’s absence.
- Be an active participant in university governance and serves on committees and task forces.
- Encourage and support appropriate community outreach and involvement that enhance the retention and graduation of students.
- Represent OMSS at events and programs.
- Remain active in professional organizations and keeps informed on current professional materials.
