Mission or Goal of Unit
The Department of Emergency Medicine provides treatment for >94,000 patients per year and serves as the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the region. Emergency Physicians manage a wide range of acute medical illnesses and injuries from neonates through geriatric patients. The department is nationally recognized for innovative management of chest pain, major trauma, medical management of EMS and for providing medical direction for aeromedical transport. The Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a Residency Program Director to provide oversight to all aspects of program administration and represent the program within the sponsor institutions and to external organizations. The program director has authority and accountability for the operation of the program in accordance with ACGME Emergency Medicine program requirements and institutional requirements. VCU Health is a Level 1 Trauma Center in Richmond, VA.

This position will be appointed by the VCU Emergency Medicine Department Chair in consultation with the VCUHS GME . The estimated time commitment is 60% (maximum of 16 hours per week clinically). Position Responsibilities
The Program Director must administer and maintain an educational environment conducive to educating the residents in each of the ACGME competency areas. They may delegate to the Associate/Assistant Program Director the duties below but is ultimately responsible. This role will oversee and ensure the quality of didactic and clinical education at all participating sites, which includes the ability and responsibility to:
  • Select, reappoint, or remove program core faculty based on criteria and evaluations.
  • Ensure at least annual anonymous evaluation of program faculty. This will be shared with each faculty member and department leadership.
  • Monitor resident supervision at all participating sites.
  • Prepare and submit all information required and requested by the ACGME .
  • Ensure compliance with grievance and due process procedures as set forth in the Institutional Requirements and implemented by the sponsoring institution.
  • Provide verification of residency education for all residents, including those who leave the program prior to completion.
  • Implement policies and procedures consistent with the institutional and program requirements for resident duty hours and the working environment, including moonlighting.
  • Monitor resident duty hours to ensure compliance with ACGME and institutional policies and adjust schedules as necessary to mitigate excessive service demands and/or fatigue. Develop and maintain clinical rotations in emergency medicine and other specialties that will provide clinical training of sufficient breadth and depth to meet or exceed standards established by the RRC -EM.
  • Ensure that the number, quality and content of the program’s didactic conferences meet or exceed standards established by the RRC -EM.
  • Ensure that residents have sufficient procedural experience and monitor each resident’s experiences in all areas required by the RRC -EM.
  • Ensure that systems or programs exist to provide and document the quality of training in all competencies or skills required of a practicing emergency physician and/or mandated by the RRC -EM, ACGME, ABEM or the participating institutions.
  • Ensure that the program regularly evaluates residents, faculty, conferences, clinical rotations and the overall program.
  • Ensure that feedback from these evaluations is provided to the appropriate individuals on a regular basis.
  • Ensure that a system exists to correct problems identified by these evaluations.
  • Ensure that systems exist to monitor resident wellness and morale, and to provide mentorship, counseling or remediation as indicated. Recruitment

    • Development of a rank order list
    • Assist department leadership in the recruitment of faculty
Required Qualifications
In accordance with ACGME guidelines, the program director must have:
  • Current certification in Emergency Medicine by ABEM and be clinically active in Emergency Medicine.
  • Current medical licensure and medical staff appointment.
  • A minimum of 5 years out of residency training.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a core faculty member in an ACGME -accredited Emergency Medicine program.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU .
