The Executive Director directs a flourishing program that has grown over the course of the Call to Lead Campaign, with an annual fund of $1.7 million and total philanthropic revenues averaging $15 million per year. The Executive Director directs the planning and execution of the Thayer School of Engineering’s program for the engagement and solicitation of alumni, corporations and friends in conjunction with the current fundraising priorities of Thayer School and the College, ensuring integrated, development planning, rigorous goal setting, and ongoing monitoring of results Description

  • Experience and visible success cultivating and soliciting major donors and closing gifts.
  • Demonstrated experience working with senior administrators, trustees and top volunteers
  • Demonstrated experience soliciting and closing seven-figure and eight-figure gifts
  • Understanding and comfort with the intricacies of business travel
  • Staff management experience

Description
PROGRAM PLANNING / LEADERSHIP
  • Develops, plans, leads, and executes a long-range advancement plan for the engagement and solicitation of alumni, corporations, and friends that support the fundraising priorities of Thayer and Dartmouth.
  • Plans an advancement outreach and communications strategy and an appropriate infrastructure and budget for the plan.
  • Earns reputation as a good citizen and ambassador for Thayer through strong representation to both internal and external diverse constituencies; serves as a trusted advisor, collaborative colleague, and effective mentor.
  • Implements strategies for communicating with donors; drafts and customizes institutional correspondence, proposals and other written materials for assigned prospects.
  • Oversees the preparation of necessary materials, including funding proposals, briefings for senior officers and scheduled stewardship reports for assigned prospects.
  • Establishes performance goals for Thayer in consultation with the Dean and others, as appropriate, and is accountable for these goals, monitors progress and devises strategies to ensure success in meeting goals.
  • Recruits, organizes, trains, motivates and supports Campaign volunteers responsible for soliciting leadership gifts.
  • Incorporates the needs of diverse populations in program planning.
  • Partners with the Dean and with colleagues in other Dartmouth Advancement offices, to formulate strategies for approaching key donors and for increasing major gift activity in support of the new building, Thayer’s endowment, and current use support for a variety of Thayer initiatives. Serves as a co-strategist on cultivating and soliciting transformational gifts, ensuring sustainable long-term growth in philanthropic contributions.
  • Designs, coordinates and implements major development programs.
  • Designs and implements programmatic reviews and evaluations of areas requiring strategic attention to improve effectiveness in achieving fund-raising priorities.
  • Assesses the effectiveness of current and proposed programs for alumni and volunteer engagement and for enhancing the School’s efforts to identify and attract a new generation of volunteer leadership.
  • Creates and implements thoughtful, multi-step plans that deepen the relationship with all core clients and ensures stewardship program and planning is designed to further loyalty, engagement and financial support, setting new benchmarks in philanthropy, stewardship and donor engagement and recognition.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others.

CULTIVATION / SOLICITATION
  • Carries a portfolio of 75-100 prospects, including individuals, families, corporations, and foundations capable of seven and eight-figure campaign commitments.
  • Builds relationships with the faculty, inviting their ideas for creative fundraising opportunities.
  • Collaborates with the Dean in the planning and execution of Thayer’s portion of the capital campaign.
  • Develops knowledge base of tax, investment, and legal aspects of charitable giving and articulates this knowledge clearly and effectively in discussions with prospective donors, their counsel, colleagues, and volunteers.
  • Serves as a resource to staff on matters of prospect strategy; offers new approaches and techniques; and seeks to provide creative solutions to complex solicitations. Relies on past experience in the field and keeps current with evolving trends in philanthropy.
  • Reviews and analyzes the currently identified prospect pool to assess accuracy of research, and amends and expands profiles as appropriate. Leverages smart use of data to inform decisions and efficiencies.

  • Hires, supervises, trains, mentors, and evaluates a team to meet changing department needs.
  • Establishes appropriate metrics to assess individual and team performance; such systems should inspire all staff and engender commitment to reaching personal goals and to raising maximum dollars for Thayer.
  • Ensures a culture where effective teamwork, collaboration and innovation are expected, recognized and rewarded.
  • Leads by example with regard to appropriate risk-taking, cross-organizational cooperation, and clear standards of conduct.
