Hazardous Materials Supervisor

Position Summary

The University at Buffalo is seeking a Hazardous Materials Supervisor to perform a wide variety of duties overseeing the day-to-day operations of the hazardous and radioactive waste programs in the unit of Environment, Health & Safety including:
  • Hazardous Waste/Materials Collection Management and Disposal
  • Radiation Safety/Waste Collection
  • Emergency Response
  • Perform laboratory safety inspections.

This role requires strong oral and written communication due to frequent interaction with professional staff (Ph.D., MD, Senior Researchers, Lab Technicians), clerical staff (administrative staff), frontline facilities employees (cleaners, skilled trade shop personnel, etc.), graduate and undergraduate students and outside vendors. Individual must be able to independently recognize potentially unsafe conditions and act accordingly to correct the situation. The Hazardous Materials Supervisor reports directly to the Hazardous Materials Manager. This role has 2 Hazardous Waste Technicians that are direct reports (SL2).

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific major/discipline required.
  • Excellent customer service skills and good interpersonal communication skills are required.
  • Detailed knowledge and use of computer programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. required.
  • A valid New York state driver’s license is required (or the ability to obtain such license within 6 months after hire).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Chemistry of significant college level coursework in Chemistry is preferred
  • Two years’ experience working in a lab setting, experience with hazardous materials handling or experience in occupational safety is preferred.
  • Possession of a CDL license with HAZMAT endorsement is preferred.
