Assistant Professor of US History

The Department of History and Political Science at Bridgewater College seeks a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor to teach classes in American History beginning in August 2022.

The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. in United States History. Preference will be given to candidates whose teaching and research fields include the history of race in post-1865 America, as well having documented experience in teaching public history. Teaching responsibilities include lower-level surveys of world and American history, and upper division courses in the candidate’s field(s). The successful candidate will show a commitment to teaching and mentoring a diverse student population within a liberal arts context and will be willing to participate in the College’s First Year Seminar and General Education programs. The teaching load is 21 semester credits per year (4-3 distribution).

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION: The Department of History and Political Science consists of four historians and four political scientists, and offers majors in History, Political Science, a History and Political Science combination, and Global Studies. Candidates who are ABD will be considered if their degree is expected to be conferred by August 1, 2022.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Bridgewater College was founded in 1880 as the first coeducational college in Virginia. Bridgewater offers bachelor’s degrees in approximately 60 majors and minors, along with four graduate programs, pre-professional programs such as medicine and law, and teacher licensure. The College is a member of NCAA Division III and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, with 23 intercollegiate athletic teams. The vibrant residential campus is located in the town of Bridgewater, Virginia, near the city of Harrisonburg in the center of the Shenandoah Valley. An excellent school system, healthy business environment, numerous arts and cultural events, one of the state's lowest crime rates, and a variety of outdoor opportunities and historic attractions draw many to the region.
