Description of Position:
The position will require that the individual use a variety of counseling techniques and strategies in order to provide, academic, career and personal counseling services to all students. In addition, the individual will be delivering services through teaching courses, facilitating workshops and one on one appointments. This is a full-time position (100%) working with military connected students from various backgrounds.

Duties and Responsibilities:
In addition to contractual duties for this position which will include veteran counseling, teaching, and veteran program coordination, all faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, in their departmental activities and in the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the counseling assignment may include evening hours. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. Counseling of veteran/dependent students in their decision-making process, exploration of alternatives with regard to educational, career, and personal goals and concerns through individual and group counseling, as well as teaching counseling, career and/or orientation courses and conducting counseling-related workshops.2. Counseling veterans/dependents on the regulations and process for certification for Veteran Education Benefits under the guidelines set by the U.S. and California Department of Veteran Affairs. 3. Provide counseling to veterans that are service-connected for combat, non-combat disabilities, and survivors of Military Sexual Trauma (M.S.T). 4. Provide guidance and resources that are veteran-specific including education planning, assistance, and the development of Veteran Education plans.5. Collaborate with the Veteran Service Certifying Officials and evaluators, and act as a liaison with on and off campus partners who support student-veterans, active duty military personnel, and veterans’ dependents. Work with services including: Disabilities Support Services, Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment, Contra Costa Veteran Service Office, Concord Vet Center, and Cal VET.6. Participate in DVC Veteran Stake Holders Meetings, DVC Veteran Services Meetings, and any districtwide task forces related to veterans.7. Advance student learning through dedicated, exemplary counseling and instruction in accordance with established course outlines that are inclusive and equitable.8. Participate in veteran program review and Credit for Prior Learning meetings, discussions, and evaluation process.9. Participate in Western Association of Veterans Education Specialists and National Association of Student Personnel Administrator Military Symposium, every year to stay updated in VA policies, procedures, and any professional development activities to be an effective counselor working with veteran/dependent students. 10. Assist in the planning, coordination, and implementation of services, such as student recruitment, orientation, career search, mock interviews, special events, campus tours, individual and specialized programs, budget planning, and other support for current veteran/dependent students.11. Participate in college and division assignments and other departmental responsibilities.12. Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.13. Coordination duties including: case management, follow up, evaluating academic progress, verifying student class enrollment each semester, referring veteran/dependent students to services and resources, helping the veteran programs improve student persistence and retention using data driven proactive measures and policies to maximize student success, in consultation with the CARE team for any interventions for the students that can include in connecting students to student support services such as EOPS/ CAL Works, DSS, MESA, FINAID, etc. 14. Research and compile statistical, narrative, financial, demographic and other data for regular and special reports to track program participation, recruitment effectiveness, student follow-up, retention and transfer rates, program evaluation criteria.15. Document contacts with students and maintains student records in compliance with program regulation.16. Provide training about veterans to different departments including the counseling department. 17. Provide crisis counseling to students when needed and coordinate with internal and external support services. 18. Assist Veteran Resource Center personnel with activities and operations. 19. Perform other duties as necessary or assigned working with veteran/dependent students.

Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience:
Understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff and faculty.

The applicant must possess one of the following qualifications (earned degrees must be from an accredited college/university):

1. Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or careerdevelopment, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling (please list degree); OR2. Bachelor’s degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage andFamily Therapist (MFT) (please list degree); OR3. A valid lifetime California Community College Instructor Credential authorizing full-time counseling; OR4. The equivalent. Desirable Qualifications:
1. Training and/or experience working with veterans/dependent students or worked with veterans and has worked with disproportionately impacted students in the classroom. An understanding and sensitivity to how historical patterns of barriers and challenges affect these groups within higher education. 2. Demonstrated commitment to student learning and promoting success of all community college students from diverse cultures, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and/or disabilities in an open access learning environment. 3. Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and development; innovation and improvement of counseling and teaching; and to assuming faculty responsibilities beyond the counseling department in a shared governance environment. 4. Experience in establishing proactive interventions to promote student persistence and retention in higher education. Has strong verbal, written, interpersonal, and facilitating skills, and experience working in committees, workgroups, or special projects that promote veteran/dependent student success.5. Demonstrated sensitivity and ability to work with the educational planning needs of Veterans, active duty, and dependents. 6. Training and/or experience providing workshops and/or teaching counseling and career courses, or related disciplines, to orient student veterans to college, transfer, career, and student success. 7. Demonstrated knowledge of VA guidelines for educational benefits for veterans, active military personnel, and their families.8. Training and/or experience working with student veterans/dependents with disabilities including: combat/non-combat related disabilities, Military Sexual Trauma (M.S.T) related including, but not limited to, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (P.T.S.D) and Traumatic Brain Injury (T.B.I.).9. Knowledge of various community resources and support groups for student-veterans.10. Demonstrated experience in with program development, case management, budget planning and coordination experience relevant to Veterans Services. Experience in establishing data driven practices and interventions. 11. Has training in or experience with military culture, structure, history, and awareness of challenges veterans face pursing higher education or career goals. 12. Familiarity of various community resources including available services of the Veteran’s Administration and local and national veteran-friendly support groups for student veterans.13. Demonstrated experience and proficiency in computer and web applications such as Colleague, SARS, Canvas, Onbase, Starfish, Dynamic forms or other platforms.
