Job Description

The Collaborative Computing Solutions (CCS) department within the Division of IT at Virginia Tech is working to ensure that faculty, staff, and students at the university have access to robust tools and environments to empower innovation and collaboration at all levels. To support this mission, CCS is seeking a talented Cloud Systems Administrator I to join our team.

About CCS
CCS directly manages the following services for Virginia Tech
- University Email Services (Gmail and Exchange Online)
- VT SaaS Offerings (G Suite for Education, Office 365, and Slack)
- Cloud Accounts and Services (AWS and Azure)
- Secure Virtual Environments (Hyper V)
- VT Active Directory

Responsibilities include:
- Monitor and manage the health of Virginia Tech supported PaaS and SaaS applications
- Develop, refine, and conduct knowledge transfer opportunities related to PaaS and SaaS applications including knowledge base articles, user groups, and in-person training courses
- Ensure data retention, availability, scalability, backup and recovery of the PaaS and SaaS solutions
- Diagnosis, troubleshoot, and consult with users regarding PaaS and SaaS applications
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment  
- Create and maintain up-to-date documentation of services and functions
- Consult with faculty, staff, researchers and IT partners to advise them on best practice strategies for using and integrating with Cloud solutions at Virginia Tech
- Follow established policies, procedures and best practices to ensure operational excellence and efficient workflow

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, IT related field or 4 years equivalent work experience in a related field
- Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills, excellent communication skills and the ability to provide leadership in assigned areas
- Ability to programmatically solve problems and automate repetitive tasks in a common scripting or programming language such as PowerShell, Python and/or VBScript
- Working knowledge of fundamental LAN/WAN technologies and IP protocols such as HTTP, DNS, DHCP, NTP, NFS including TCP/IP networking (IPv4/IPv6)
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment  
- Ability to exercise confidentiality, good judgment, and critical thinking when working with sensitive issues
- In order to comply with export control laws, this position is restricted to a U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident

Preferred Qualifications

- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, IT related field or 6 years equivalent work experience in a related field
- Experience using Microsoft System Center products, including SCCM and SCOM
- Experience with 3rd-party cloud solutions such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, and Google Compute Platform
- Working knowledge of data encryption related to SSL/TLS and PKI certificates
- Working knowledge of authentication protocols and other methods of providing security for passwords and network communication, including Multi-Factor Authentication
- Strong skills in preparing reports/documents and presenting information
- Experience in providing security guidance and training to both technical personnel and end-users
- Relevant professional certifications such as MCSA: Office 365, AWS certifications, Azure certifications, SANS, etc.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check as well as documentation of COVID-19 vaccination or receive approval from the university for a vaccination exemption due to a medical condition or sincerely held religious belief.
