Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Artist in Residence: Comedic Arts Production
Join our community and experience Emerson College!

The Interdepartmental BFA Program in Comedic Arts and the Department of Visual & Media Arts (VMA) at Emerson College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor, tenured associate professor, or a full-time artist-in-residence appointment in Film/Television/Digital Media Content production with an emphasis on comedy. Applications from all faculty levels are encouraged. This full-time position begins on August 18, 2022. The program seeks candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through teaching, creative scholarship, service activities and engagement with students in- and outside of the classroom.

Emerson College is committed to an active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity—in people, in the curriculum, in the co-curriculum, and in the College's intellectual, social, cultural, and geographical communities. Emerson endorses a framework of inclusive excellence, which recognizes that institutional excellence comes from fully engaging with diversity in all aspects of institutional activities. Emerson is committed to strengthening communities, including our workplace, by fostering the development of the intercultural competencies necessary for meaningful citizenship in an increasingly complex, pluralistic society.

The School of the Art's BFA degree in Comedic Arts is the first of its kind in the country, enrolling 100 majors and 76 minors. It integrates writing, performance and production with new courses that examine comedy from a variety of perspectives. Immersive and hands-on in its approach, this major draws its faculty and courses from Emerson's departments of Visual and Media Arts, Performing Arts, Writing, Literature & Publishing, and the Institute for the Liberal Arts & Interdisciplinary Studies. In addition to learning and practicing the craft of comedy across arts disciplines, Comedic Arts explores the historical, cultural and theoretical dimensions of comedy as a global art form.

The Department of Visual and Media Arts is a vibrant and engaged community of artists, scholars and professionals, with over 100 full- and part-time faculty members, 1400 undergraduate majors, and more than 100 MFA graduate students. The Hollywood Reporter ranked Emerson's film program #6 in the country in their 2021 ratings guide.

Emerson College is the nation's only four-year institution dedicated exclusively to majors in communication and the arts in a liberal arts context. Its main campus is located in the center of the dynamic multicultural city of Boston, in the heart of Boston's downtown Theatre District. The college also has campuses in Los Angeles and the Netherlands. Emerson College enrolls over 5,100 graduate and undergraduate students from more than 58 countries and all 50 states.

Primary Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities will be teaching introductory-to-advanced undergraduate classes in film/television/video production both in the studio and in the field. Courses will serve students in the interdepartmental major in Comedic Arts, in addition to Visual and Media Arts majors. Additional responsibilities to the Comedic Arts program include: academic advising, student mentorship, support for admissions, serving on the Comedic Arts coordinating committee, and supporting Comedic Arts events and activities. An active creative and professional practice may be a requirement of the position depending on the type of appointment.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have an MFA in film/television/media or a terminal degree in a related field, or a bachelor's degree and significant media making (film, television, digital content) experience comparable to a terminal degree. All candidates should have significant production credits as a primary creator of widely recognized comedy film, television, or digital media. College level teaching experience is strongly preferred. The ability to teach multi-camera studio television directing for comedy would be beneficial. The successful applicant will help develop the School of the Arts's interdisciplinary Comedic Arts production curriculum and create deeper connections to other departments, programs, and student organizations.

The School of the Arts at Emerson offers a dynamic curriculum of exceptional range to prepare students to live and work in an increasingly multicultural and global society. Upholding the principle that diversity enriches education, Emerson College provides students with opportunities to learn from individuals who bring deep knowledge, different experiences, and unfamiliar perspectives to bear on teaching and creative work. More generally, the College is committed to infusing diversity into the curriculum, co-curricular offerings, and other activities as the means to develop community and intellectual growth. To support and sustain this community of learning, applicants demonstrating a record of significant engagement with issues of social, economic, racial and/or gender justice and equity in their work will be given preference.

Application Instructions

Applicants must complete an online application form and submit a letter of application, a current CV, and contact information for three references (not to be contacted without prior approval). The letter of application should highlight the candidate's creative and professional work, and describe their approach to teaching comedy production that also addresses how the candidate works to achieve inclusive excellence within their classrooms. Successful candidates will be contacted for samples of creative work as well as materials that demonstrate effective teaching, project mentoring, and engagement with diversity in the classroom.
