The Department of Health and Human Performance in the College of Education at Texas State University, a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) located in San Marcos, Texas, invites applications for the position of Department Chair. University:

Founded in 1899 as a normal school, Texas State University is now home to 38,077 students across seven academic colleges and The Graduate, Honors, and University Colleges, and two campuses.  The university holds a Carnegie classification of Doctoral University-High Research Activity and is engaged in a strategic plan to attain eligibility for the State of Texas’ National Research University Fund. The university is in year five of its six year strategic plan, and will begin developing the next strategic plan during the 2022-2023 academic year.

San Marcos is in the center of the innovation corridor, 40 minutes south of downtown Austin and 60 minutes north of San Antonio, and is rich in vibrant and eclectic communities. The campus is situated within a public school district that is attended by more than 50 percent Latinx students.

College of Education:

The Department of Health and Human Performance (HHP) is one of three academic departments in the College of Education and is an integral component of the college’s success and future. The other academic departments in the college offer degrees in professional counseling, adult and higher education, and all aspects of PK-12 educator preparation. Total college headcount across all degrees from undergraduate through doctoral is 5,047. HHP is served by the college’s pre- and post-award research office, Undergraduate Academic Advising Center, and five associate deans working in areas of student success, academic affairs and educator preparation, faculty and strategic development, research and sponsored programs, and educational partnerships and enrollment. The HHP department chair is an active and essential member of the college’s leadership team.  

Department:

The Department of Health and Human Performance (HHP), with 49 full-time faculty and 7 staff, serves 2,551 majors seeking undergraduate and master’s degrees in Athletic Training, Exercise and Sports Science, Public Health, and Recreation. HHP is the highest enrolled department in the university, its Exercise and Sports Science undergraduate degree is the third highest enrolled major in the university, and 67% of students in this inclusive ESS degree are persons of color. Department facilities were renovated within the last year, including new research labs and a new high-tech active learning classroom. The department is housed alongside the beautiful San Marcos River, which provides year-round opportunities for outdoor recreation. The department collaborates with the university’s Translational Health Research Initiative and the comprehensive employee wellness program, both of which provide opportunities for enhancing funded and other research activities. 

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will lead a dynamic department with the support of administrative staff, an associate chair, program coordinators, and faculty. Reporting to the dean, department chairs are the chief executives of their departments and are responsible for the implementation of the university, college, and department policies and strategic plans, and for the development, coordination, and administration of all academic programs and activities within their departments. The chair is responsible for providing collaborative leadership for matters related to accreditation, teaching schedules, recruitment of new faculty, evaluation of faculty and staff performance, support for grant and external development opportunities, student advising, and formulation and implementation of strategic plans and policies. As representatives of their departments, chairs articulate program aspirations to constituents inside and outside the university community, develop and implement strategic goals, promote research and teaching excellence, steward resources, and provide collaborative leadership in the college. Dynamic leadership, a commitment to shared governance, clear communication, strong interpersonal skills, and a keen strategic vision are crucial characteristics required for success. The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Foster an environment that values shared governance, equity, dignity, justice, cultural competence, and academic freedom;
  • Recruit, retain, and develop a diverse, high-quality faculty by supporting faculty research, scholarship, teaching, partnerships, and external funding efforts;
  • Contribute to the continued development and success of the department through leadership in research, teaching, and service; and
  • Manage the administrative affairs of the department and advocate for the department across campus and outside the university.

Required Qualifications:       

The department is particularly interested in recruiting an individual who can embrace and enhance the vision of a diverse, collegial, and productive academic environment. Required qualifications are:

  • Earned doctorate (e.g., Ph.D., Dr.PH., Ed.D.) in a health and human performance related field.
  • Tenured faculty member with a current rank of advanced associate professor (with at least four years in rank by September 1, 2022) or professor.
  • Demonstrable record of scholarly, teaching, and service excellence commensurate with appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor in the department, inclusive of a record of sustained peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience in academic leadership such as academic program coordination, associate or assistant department chair, management of large externally funded projects, or college or university level administration/leadership.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current rank of professor or eligibility to be appointed professor. 
  • A sustained record of working with historically and currently underserved and underrepresented communities and individuals who represent diverse populations and identities (please note that Texas State is an HSI).
  • Commitment to working collaboratively with department faculty, staff, and others throughout the university within a spirit of shared governance.
  • Experience as a contributing member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Experience in leading and facilitating external partnerships, funding, and/or programs. 
  • Experience using a variety of instructional strategies, such as face to face delivery, online, hybrid, experiential learning, or field-based experiences to engage students with diverse needs and experiences.
  • Participation in professional organizations.
  • Experience with accreditation and/or academic program review processes.
