Arizona State University’s College of Health Solutions (CHS) is seeking a full-time, 9-month non-tenured instructional faculty member at the rank of Lecturer to teach in the rapidly expanding Speech and Hearing Science (SHS), undergraduate B.S. program. Students in the SHS BS program attain broad-based knowledge in the basic aspects of speech, language, and hearing sciences, which prepares them for graduate study in audiology or speech-language pathology, or potential employment opportunities in related health and behavioral fields. This popular program includes both in-person, on-campus students and fully online students. Faculty in the program are multidisciplinary, and include tenure-track, lecturers, and clinically trained professionals who work together to create, teach and disseminate foundational knowledge. This is a fixed-term appointment that is renewable annually.  Subsequent one-year appointments may be offered, under the same terms and conditions, at the discretion of the college and university. 

Through teaching, academic programs, service and research, all faculty at the College of Health Solutions address one or more of our three major areas of focus: 1) The systems of health care and the health needs of populations; 2) Health and human performance of individuals across the lifespan; 3) Personalized interventions through precision health. Across these areas, we work to address complex and difficult health problems which require transformative collaboration, translational research and innovation. We are particularly interested in making an impact on populations with significant health disparities.

Responsibilities for this position include teaching undergraduate courses online and in-person and providing service to the college and relevant degrees. Applicants must present evidence of teaching experience and a strong commitment to high quality teaching at the undergraduate level. Typical workloads for instructional faculty are consistent with 80% teaching (usually equivalent to four courses per semester) and 20% service.

About the College of Health Solutions

The College of Health Solutions is committed to translating scientific health research and discovery into practice to improve health outcomes through education, research and service. We equip students with the knowledge and skills to influence healthier lifestyle choices; develop creative interventions to improve the health of people and populations; analyze and translate large amounts of health data into solutions; and maximize the technology, science, business and application of diagnostics. Our research programs encompass basic science, discovery science, clinical trials, intervention science and measurement of health outcomes. In all cases, our faculty use interdisciplinary approaches to address the complex systems that underpin health problems. We are highly collaborative, transparent and team-oriented. Current training programs include behavioral health, biomedical diagnostics, biomedical informatics, exercise science, health promotion, health sciences, kinesiology, medical studies, nutrition, population health, the science of health care delivery, and speech and hearing science. Our programs are offered at the ASU Downtown Phoenix, Tempe, Polytechnic, West and Lake Havasu campuses, as well as on Mayo Clinic’s campus in north Phoenix.

Required Qualifications

  • MS, PhD, or doctoral degree in a field appropriate to the duties, such as Speech and Hearing Science, Communication Disorders, Speech-Language Pathology, Psychology, or other related fields
  • At least two years of teaching experience at the college/university level
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to teach in-person and/or online undergraduate courses
  • Demonstrated ability to work, collaborate, and communicate effectively with diverse students, colleagues, community partners, and staff in a multicultural environment.
  • Shows commitment to our College’s Justice Equity Diversity and Inclusion Council’s mission and vision

Desired Qualifications

  • Clinical experience or certification in Speech-Language Pathology
  • Teaching experience across different formats (in-person, asynchronous online, synchronous online formats)
  • Background knowledge in speech and language development and processes, speech science and anatomy, and/or speech-language pathology/communication disorders
  • Experience with developing undergraduate courses or using learning management systems (e.g., Canvas).
  • Evidence of applying effective teaching practices
  • Demonstrated ability to provide service to the program and university, as well as to the community and profession.
  • Experience in implementing instructional methods, student initiatives, faculty initiatives, scholarships, administrative practices, or other actions with the goal of reducing systemic discrimination and disadvantages facing students of minority backgrounds
