The Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 1, 2022. Applicants should have a PhD in anthropology.

Candidates should be able to present a record of effective teaching and highly regarded scholarship in the form of peer-reviewed publications and external funding that aligns with department priorities. We welcome applications from scholars with specializations in urbanization, inequality, social equity, and human security in the global south, including Africa, Asia, or Latin America. A teaching specialization in sociocultural anthropology is preferred. In addition to scholarship, teaching, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, responsibilities will include participation in department, college, and university activities.

The Department of Anthropology at American University is a four-field department with a social justice orientation that prioritizes excellence in teaching and research with scholarly/academic and public impact. Geographical areas represented among faculty include regions of the US, South and Central America, Asia, and the Middle East. Research and teaching interests intersect with urban studies, Indigenous studies, Middle Eastern studies, health studies and Black studies. The department offers an undergraduate major, master’s in public anthropology and PhD programs, through which students can focus on any of the main sub-disciplines. It trains anthropologists to address issues related to social justice, social inequalities, and public engagement in the contemporary world and through its past.
