The Chemistry department is currently looking for a highly motivated, experienced Lab Manager to manage the day-to-day operations of the lab of Prof. Paul Alivisatos at the University of Chicago. Prof. Alivisatos’ research concerns the structural, thermodynamic, optical, and electrical properties of colloidal inorganic nanocrystals. The Lab Manager investigates the fundamental physical and chemical properties of nanocrystals and works to develop practical applications of these new materials in biomedicine and renewable energy.

In this exciting role, The Lab Manager will serve an integral function within the lab to ensure smooth operation of day-to-day activities and support various elements of program planning and delivery, including managing information systems, ensuring continual and efficient information flow among program participants, budget development and tracking for various project funders.

 Responsibilities

  • Provide supplementary mentorship (either formally or informally) to staff or students as needed, including advice and guidance on techniques, as well as consultation on project work.
  • Serve as a technical resource for other research staff.
  • Provide support for onboarding/orientation functions including bench set up for new lab members and transition/handover for departing lab members.
  • Work closely with the PI to plan and write grants to obtain additional funding.
  • Develop, administer, and oversee subcontracts to other laboratories, government agencies and private institutions.
  • Manage program deliverables (e.g., manuscript submissions and progress reports); guide the development of project scopes and schedules.
  • Assure timely completion and/or follow-up.
  • Oversee the daily activities of the laboratory including lab maintenance; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.
  • Assist with purchasing laboratory equipment.
  • Oversee lab facility use and maintenance in a laboratory that employs diverse instrumentation, including chemical synthesis stations, high resolution TEM, x-ray diffractometer, photoelectron spectrometer, dry boxes, fluorimeter, UV-vis absorption spectrometers, FT-IR spectrometer, AFM, HPLC, several homebuilt optical and laser systems, and miscellaneous small equipment.
  • Implement strict adherence to environment, safety, and health (ES&H) policies during all experimental operations (including chemical inventory, chemical hazards, and chemical waste disposal SOPs, protocols, and policies).
  • Familiarize and implement all ES&H policies and practices in laboratory including knowledge of emergency preparedness plans and use of protective equipment and participation in relevant training programs. Assist with establishing operating guidelines to ensure safety of operator and instruments.
  • Organize, plan, establish and monitor fiscal budget control of contracts and grants administration, gifts, endowments, and privately funded projects for research program.
  • Anticipate potential program issues and formulate and recommend corrective actions, such as schedule revisions, fund reallocations, and revisions to staffing levels as needed. Develop task status reports when needed.
  • Identify and select methods and techniques to solve problems.
  • Oversee execution and delivery of procurement services including developing procurement documents, justifications, appropriate approvals on major procurements, the management of payment schedules, invoices.
  • Coordinate with Chemistry department administrator and PSD HR staff to identify and execute necessary HR actions, e.g., recruitment, salary administration, performance management, employee and labor relations, and guest and visitor arrangements.
  • Creates first drafts for scientific writing and publications, including protocols and grants.
  • Serves as a resource for collecting data and performing analysis. Facilitates and promotes a research project by providing scientific or intellectual information.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 Education

  • Ph.D. in Physical or Analytical Chemistry or related field.
 Experience:

  • Previous experience contributing to publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience in analyzing and interpreting data.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interest in mentoring and developing others.
  • Experience with maintenance of specific equipment indicated above.
 Technical knowledge skills

  • Understanding of academic research facility needs.
  • General background in a discipline related to the work of specific lab.
  • Knowledge and experience in managing facilities, operations, maintenance, space, and equipment administration in a research setting.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects in a complex and technical environment.
  • Familiarity with health and safety compliance regulations.
