General Description of the Position
Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director for Library
Services, the Cataloging and Collection Development Librarian
is responsible for the daily operation of cataloging, acquisitions
and collection development. Adhere to the University Library
goals and objectives to support the teaching, learning, and
research needs of students and faculty in all academic disciplines.
Cataloging and Collection management includes but is not
limited to original and copy cataloging (multiple
formats), preservation (binding) and weeding/deselecting
library materials. In addition, this position coordinates the
ordering of print monographs, ebooks, and electronic media, and
tracks departmental spending. Supervises three full time staff in
the Cataloging and Acquisitions Unit of Technical Services.
Hours: Monday - Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Lunch 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.; Saturday as scheduled and Extended Hours During Exams.
Essential Functions
The following are the functions essential to performing this
job.
1. In consultation with the coordinator of technical services,
develops and implements policies, procedures, standards and goals
to continuously improve cataloging, acquisitions and
collection development workflows.
2. Creating original MARC records, copy cataloging, editing,
exporting and importing bibliographic records in all formats
in OCLC Connexion and the Integrated Library System. Identifying
and correcting incomplete/incorrect records and upgrading
records according to cataloging rules and standards including
authority control.
3. Coordinates processing, including labeling and collections
marking of library materials. Recatalogs materials, as
appropriate, to provide better organization, discovery and
access.
4. Coordinate the ordering of print monographs, ebooks, and media,
to track departmental spending. Interacts with library subject
liaisons to ensure library materials selected to be purchased are
not duplicates and evaluates e-book selections.
5. Maintains awareness of original and copy cataloging standards
and trends.
6. Provides supervision and training for acquisitions, cataloging
and serials staff in acquiring the skills, knowledge, and
competencies required to improve performance.
7. Maintains departmental statistics and prepares reports as
requested by the coordinator of technical services or library
director (Example: cataloging statistics, preservation and
deselected weeded materials).
8. Manage the inventory and discard of library materials and
equipment.
9. Teach research classes and develop LibGuides in assigned subject
areas. As the liaison and collection developer purchase
library materials for Health and Public Policy (includes Nursing
and Social Work).
10. Ability to work collaboratively and effectively both as a team
member and independently and to promote teamwork among
colleagues.
11. Ability to work cooperatively with people from diverse
backgrounds.
12. Performs routine operations at the Circulation/Reserves Desk as
scheduled.
13. Performs other duties and projects as assigned by the
coordinator of technical services or library director
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The individual in this job must possess these skills and abilities
or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform
the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable
accommodation, using some other combination of skills and
abilities.
1. Working experience with cataloging and acquisitions in an
integrated library system (Horizon Library Management System)
2. Working experience utilizing OCLC Connexion to catalog, this
includes original and copy cataloging.
3. Familiarity with a library content management system (e.g.,
LibGuides) and library vendor services (Midwest Library
Services, EBSCO Gobi Services).
4. Attention-to-detail, ability to develop training materials and
provide original, copy cataloging (all formats) and
acquisitions training.
5. Strong commitment to services for undergraduates, graduates,
faculty, staff, and other library patrons. Ability to work
cooperatively with people from diverse backgrounds.
6. Demonstrated analytical, organizational, and problem-solving
skills; ability to perform workflow analyses. Ability to work
independently and meet project deadlines.
7. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication
skills.
8. Knowledge of computer office applications, Microsoft Word,
Excel, Access, PowerPoint.
Qualification Standards
1. Education: ALA accredited Master’s degree
in library and information science.
2. Successful experience: Three years of
relevant work experience in an academic library
technical services department including a minimum of 2-3 years
supervisory experience.
3. Original Cataloging, Collection Development and Acquisitions
experience.
4. Demonstrated ability utilizing OCLC Connexion client to catalog
(multiple formats) library materials including original
monographs applying Library of Congress classification, Library
of
Congress Subject Headings, the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules
(AACR2), MARC21 formats for bibliographic and authority data
and Resource Description and Access (RDA).
5. Physical Requirements:
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus, for reading materials and computer screens.
- • Must be able to work occasionally in dimly lit areas.
- • Must be able to stand on feet, bend, lift, pull materials off the shelf, move up to 30 pounds, and push/pull book carts.
- • Must be able to handle damaged, molding and dusty books.
6. Other Preferences: Second Master’s degree and Banner experience.
