Northern Arizona University (NAU) is seeking an internationally experienced Vice Provost for Global Affairs to steward the ongoing success of the Center for International Education (CIE) in continuing to build bridges between the NAU community and the world.  The position will have primary responsibility for shaping and implementing the University’s global strategy as well as contributing to the expansion of institutional activities in support of NAU’s longstanding, successful history of global engagement.

 

International education has been an institutional priority at NAU for over 50 years and will continue to be a key component of institutional strategy heading into the future.  NAU has been recognized with the Senator Paul Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization in 2012, the Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in International Education in 2017, and is currently (as of 2021) ranked #6 in the nation for long-term study abroad by the Institute for International Education.

 

Job Description

 

The Vice Provost for Global Affairs will report to NAU’s Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and will lead a dedicated team of staff in support of the University’s global engagement goals.

 

Specifically, the Vice Provost for Global Affairs will:

  • Align CIE’s international education agenda with NAU’s strategic road map and position the University to continue as a leader and innovator in global education in support of inclusive academic excellence.
  • Foster culture and practices that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within CIE and through CIE’s activities across the university and around the world.
  • Oversee the CIE leadership team in developing, organizing, and maintaining sustainable and scalable international program models and outcomes.
  • Provide guidance on NAU’s international recruitment and retention goals and approaches to increase international student enrollment, while adapting the mix of nations represented in alignment with NAU’s status as an Hispanic-Serving Institution.
  • Collaborate with the campus community to ensure international undergraduate and graduate students are welcomed, supported in their academic careers, and successfully integrated into NAU student life.
  • Collaborate with Deans, Chairs, and faculty to develop institution-wide criteria for creating international partnerships that are inclusive, multi-dimensional, and serve diverse populations.
  • Support faculty international research, curriculum development, and grant projects, grounding this work in the strategic needs of the academic Departments, Schools, and Colleges, and the NAU-Yuma campus.
  • Oversee outbound programs and explore opportunities to set a bold agenda for increasing student access to and equitable participation in transformational international experiences.
  • Lead in the development and assessment of the CIE-wide student learning outcomes and skills that are rooted in students’ international experiences, especially as they relate to students’ career progression.
  • Increase and support international scholar representation and impact on the Flagstaff campus.
  • Engage with campus partners on donor development, alumni engagement, and fundraising activities.
  • Oversee a strategy for communications outreach that highlights the value of international experience and global engagement in the context of the university’s strategic goals.

 

The preferred start date for the position is July 1, 2022, with an earlier start possible based on the successful candidate’s availability.

 

Minimum qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in a related field AND six years of administrative, academic, or executive leadership experience; OR
  • Doctoral degree and three years of administrative, academic, or executive experience; OR
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable leadership knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

Annual Salary:

Commensurate with experience.
