Ball State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance welcomes applicants for Director of Costume Shop.

The Ball State Department of Theatre and Dance offers eight diverse curricular options that develop and nurture each student’s creativity, curiosity, and collaborative skills. We are always growing and changing, seeking new ways to inspire our students to be thinkers, responsible citizens, and motivated artists who will make a difference in creating the next generation’s voice. We are seeking collegial, collaborative professional personnel with excellent communication and organizational skills to join us.

The department is a BFA /BA/BS undergraduate-only program with over 400 theatre majors, 65 dance majors and 45 full-time faculty/staff. This includes over 50 majors within our BA/BS and BFA Design and Technology Program. The Design and Technology students also participate in a senior year showcase in Chicago where they meet and share their portfolios with industry professionals. The Department plays an active role in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival ( KCACTF ) and with the American College Dance Association ( ACDA ). Ball State is accredited by both the National Association of Schools of Theatre ( NAST ) and the National Association of Schools of Dance ( NASD ). Our undergraduate only program, low student-to-faculty ratio, hands-on advising and mentoring from a faculty of working professionals, and distinguished guest artists allow for the personal development of each student as both an individual and an artist.

Position Function

Responsible for the planning, construction, and mounting of costumes for all theatre and dance productions for Department of Theatre and Dance University and Strother Theatre productions; hire, train, supervise, and mentor support staff and student employees in the costume shop; oversee the timely completion of all costume elements; maintain and supervise the effective maintenance of all costume facilities and related equipment; Teach THEA 223 costume construction techniques, or other appropriate classes, to all students.

Minimum Education

Master’s degree in theatre or related discipline completed by date of employment or an additional three years of professional experience in costume construction/costume shop management or related experience will be accepted in lieu of a master’s degree.

Minimum Experience

One year of costume construction or related experience; one year of costume shop management or related experience.

Minimum Other

Authorization to work in the US

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Preferred Education

M.F.A. in Costume Design, Costume Construction, or Fashion Design.

Preferred Experience

Three years of costume construction experience.

Three years of costume shop management or related experience.

Experience teaching Costume Construction and/or related costuming courses.

Ability to serve as a costume designer for productions when needed.

Preferred Other

Assign and review work; orient and train staff and students; make recommendations as to interviewing and selection, performance appraisal, and discipline; maintain salary budgets.

Research, pattern, drape, cut, construct, teach, and supervise the construction or alteration of all mock ups, costumes and costume accessories; includes supervise the repair, cleaning, and organizing of the wardrobe during the run of each production.

Supervise the digitization of items related to the Department’s costume collection.

Direct the finding, purchasing, and performing of any modifications (dye, distress, paint, etc.) fabrics, notions and all other materials needed to build costumes and costume accessories.
