The Department of Classics at Dartmouth College invites applicants for a full-time tenure-track appointment to begin on July 1, 2022. We seek applicants who specialize in any aspect of Greek literature and culture. Research trajectories in which we are particularly interested include, but are not limited to: race and ethnicity in the ancient Mediterranean; theater and performance; translation studies; Greek law or political theory; myth and religion; digital humanities; or the engagement with Greek and Roman literature in Caribbean, Latin American, Asian, Native American, African, or any diasporic intellectual traditions.

In recruiting for this position, the Classics Department is motivated to broaden the range of scholarly specialties, viewpoints, and experiences represented within our department. Qualified candidates will be able to offer new courses that strengthen the department’s appeal to Dartmouth’s highly diverse student body. We are especially interested in applicants who are able to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds, including but not limited to racial and ethnic minorities, members of all sexes, individuals who identify with LGBTQ+ communities, individuals with disabilities, individuals from lower income backgrounds, and first generation college students.

Qualifications

Applicants should hold a PhD or ABD in Classics or a related field (if ABD, the PhD should be conferred by the start date for the position) and should be qualified to teach Latin and ancient Greek at all levels.

All applicants should supply 1) a curriculum vitae; 2) a writing sample; 3) a cover letter; 4) a separate statement explaining how their teaching, research, service, and life experiences prepare them to advance Dartmouth's commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion; 5) 3 letters of recommendation from teachers or mentors who can speak to their research potential, their progress toward the PhD (if the degree is not yet complete) and their ability to connect with undergraduates.
