Job Description:

The Department of Arab and Islamic Civilizations (ARIC) seeks a full-time appointment in Classical and Premodern Arabic Literature at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor beginning in Fall 2022. This is a fixed-term position for four years. Preference will be given to candidates who primarily teach the Classical and Premodern Arabic literary canon but can also cover thematic courses that combine works from both the classical and the modern periods. The successful candidate will be an engaged teacher and is expected to teach humanities courses in the AUC core curriculum, introductory courses to Classical Arabic Literature, intermediate thematic courses in Arabic literature, as well as more specialized graduate seminars in Classical Arabic Literature and the areas of his/her specialization. The candidate will be expected to teach courses at all levels (introductory to advanced) in both English and Arabic and to supervise graduate theses written in English.

They will also be expected to engage actively in research to be published in respectable venues in the field; supervise M.A. theses and serve on thesis committees; and provide department, school and university service. The teaching load is normally nine credits per semester, including courses in the M.A. program.

Requirements:

Applicants must have a PhD in Arabic Literature with a specialization in Classical and Premodern Arabic Literature from a reputable university by 1 September, 2022, preferably with a record of an active research agenda and teaching experience.
