Position Details
Public Safety, in partnership with the University community, supports the mission of Wesleyan University by providing a wide range of services and assistance to members of the Wesleyan and surrounding communities. Public Safety is a 24/7/365 operation that is vital for the safety and continued functioning of the community.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Public Safety the Supervisor, is responsible for the preservation of peace, protection of life and property, prevention of crime and proper enforcement of the rules and regulations established by the University.

Responsibilities include:
  • Conducting staff briefing at the start of each shift
  • Issuing and inspecting equipment
  • Carrying out and enforcing Wesleyan rules, regulations and policies, particularly the Code of Nonacademic Conduct
  • Conducting field inspections
  • Transport students
  • Exercising discretion in all situations and notifying appropriate personnel
  • Receiving and reviewing reports and following up and conducting investigations as necessary
  • Marinating records and completing assignments
  • Interacting with other law enforcement and public agencies on matters related to the university community
  • Protecting the scene of a crime or accident
  • Conducting thorough preliminary investigations of crimes or accidents and obtaining necessary internal or external support services
  • Providing immediate aid in the event of accident or sudden illness
  • Checking the security of university buildings and property
  • Maintaining fire protection/safety
  • Providing a variety of special security services
  • Patrolling campus on foot, by motor vehicle and bicycle
  • Providing back up to central communications dispatch team as assigned
  • Performing other similar and related duties as assigned.

This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position in the public safety department and is a part of the supervisory team. Members of the supervisory team support the demands of a 24X7X365 operation.

This position is classified as essential personnel. Positions that are designated as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
Minimum Qualifications
Associates Degree and a minimum of two year supervisory experience in a security department, public safety, military or a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience .

Proven ability to show good judgement and strong organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to effectively write and analyze information.

Demonstrated understanding of application local, state and federal laws and ordinances.

Demonstrated ability to show initiative, provide leadership, handle difficult situations independently and follow detailed policies and procedures.

Effective communication skills

Ability to walk, run, and lift up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation

Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact collegially with individuals of different backgrounds.

Must have (or be able to obtain prior to hire) and maintain a valid driver’s license with a safe driving record

Must be able to obtain and maintain Connecticut Security Officer certification


Preferred Qualifications
State of Connecticut Security Officer certification strongly preferred

Previous campus security experience at a college or university.
