Position Summary

Under the medical supervision of the Medical Director and the general supervision of the Director of Health Services, conducts physical examinations, interview students with medical problems, diagnose illnesses and prescribe treatment and health measures, refer where appropriate for other specialized surgical and medical treatment; as necessary, consult with private physicians and public agencies in securing treatment for students requiring services beyond those available in Student Health & Counseling Services; advise on health education and preventive medical care; order laboratory studies and x-ray examinations; screen students for communicable diseases including sexually transmitted infections, participate in clinics and staff conferences; participate in the Quality Assurance activities of Health Services; and record and complete case histories and reports using an electronic medical record system.

This position is housed under Student Health & Counseling Services (SHCS).

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of and the ability to effectively and efficiently apply the principles and methods essential to the diagnosis and treatment of common primary care medical disorders, and in the assessment and response to acute medical situations; understanding of community resources for referral of medical care and treatment beyond the scope of the Student Health Center; knowledge of current public health practices; knowledge of local, state, and national laws and regulations pertaining to the medical field; thorough knowledge of applicable professional ethics standards and patient privacy; ability to serve as a mentor and resource consultant for other health center personnel; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of medical practitioners and specialists, as well as students, administrators, staff, and faculty.

Education and Experience:

Graduation from a medical school and completion of a residency training program in a primary care field such as family medicine, general internal medicine, gynecology, general pediatrics, emergency medicine, preventive medicine accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent.

License and Certification Requirements:

Physicians in this classification must possess* and maintain:
  • A valid State of California license to practice medicine.
  • Current American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) board certification appropriate for the assigned duties. See note below.
  • A valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration and number for prescribing controlled substances.
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification as appropriate for the assigned duties.

Note: In accordance with Executive Order 943 a physician can be given clinical privileges pending initial certification, but must be board certified as soon as possible, but no later than two years after the date of hire.

Required Qualifications
  1. Possession of a valid and relevant California professional license.
  2. MD or DO with current American Board of Specialties (ABMS) certification appropriate to assigned duties or board eligible no later than two years after date of hire. Specialty may be in: Family Practice, Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine.
  3. Possession of a valid Drug Enforcement Agent (DEA) certificate/number to include: Schedule II, III, IV, V.
  4. Hands-on experience with PC based computer (Windows environment) and Electronic Medical Record.
  5. Advanced Cardiac Life Support recognition (ACLS).
  6. Knowledge and understanding of current recognized standards of care within the scope of licensure.
  7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  8. Experience in women's healthcare.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Knowledge and experience in Behavioral Medicine / Mental Health
  2. X-Ray Supervisor Certification
  3. Knowledge and experience in outpatient orthopedics
  4. Two years experience beyond residency, in Sports Medicine, Family Practice, Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine.
