Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Senior Program Advisor and the Director of College-to-Learner, Academic Programs in the College of Continuing Education, the Academic Advisor performs moderately complex professional student service work. Assignments typically requiring the application of both knowledge and judgment in using the principles, techniques, standards, guides and professional skills characteristic of a particular student service program or activity. This generally requires: planning; both interviewing and counseling techniques; judgment to recommend solutions to problems and changes in program procedures; and/or acting as spokesperson within the area of expertise.

This role requires use of sound independent judgment while dealing with moderately complex student service problems. It demands the utilization of effective interpersonal skills with both individuals and groups, to be flexible and versatile, to use tact and sensitivity and to apply effective analytical skills in assisting with the preparation of documentation, mandatory reporting and program assessment.

The purpose of this work is to assist students, particularly those in the College of Continuing Education (CCE), in making successful progress toward their degree objectives; to provide learning experiences which supplement those in the classroom; and to assist and encourage students to utilize effectively the knowledge, skills and abilities learned during their university careers. The position will also provide support to re-enrollment and student success initiatives within CCE.

Advisors at the College of Continuing Education advise incoming, transfer, and continuing students on curriculum and course selection for the major, as well as on General Education and graduation requirements. The Advisors work closely with the College's leadership, program managers and program coordinators. The incumbent needs to be sensitive to the needs of a diverse student population.

FLSA: Exempt

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,304 - $6,120 per month

Hiring Range: $4,304 - $5,212

Salary Grade/Range: 3082-RANGE A-Grade-1

Work Hours: Monday - Friday 8am-5pm, work hours may vary depending on department operations

The College of Continuing Education (CCE) has been offering workshops, courses, certificates, and degrees to adult learners since 1951. The Academic Programs Unit (APU) offers a variety of self-support educational programs, including youth programming, undergraduate degree completion programs, graduate degrees, certificates, credentials, workforce training, and essential community education programs. The programs offered in APU directly support the mission of CCE and the college's strategic goals to enhance student success, foster relationships with our communities, and grow a strategic portfolio of programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities:

Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior. Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi‑aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office. Possession of these knowledge and abilities typically is demonstrated through the Experience requirements below.

Experience:

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Education:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

Required Qualifications


Experience
  • Experience in a higher education setting (e.g. advising, admissions, student programming or development).
  • Experience with advising students in degree programs, including general education and degree pathway work.
  • Experience with university admission requirements and communicating those to prospective students.
  • Experience developing advising strategies to increase retention and student success.

  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to provide direct programs and/ or services to a diverse student population.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.
  • Proficiency using standard office software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Familiarity working with university-based record/ data systems/ software.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects and processes simultaneously and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to prepare reports, presentations and assist with preparing publications.
  • Ability to understand, interpret and apply moderately complex rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions at the appropriate level of the position.
  • Ability to be able to initiate plans, organize, prioritize, multi-task, and coordinate work in a fast-paced organization.

    Preferred Qualifications

    14. Master's degree in Educational Leadership, Education, College Student Personnel, Educational Counseling, or related field

    15. Knowledge of General Education in the California State University system.

    16. Experience working with students from various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

    17. Experience working with at-risk students.

    18. Ability to work occasional morning, evenings, and weekends
