Muslim Chaplain and Advisor
Target Hire Date
2022-01-10-08:00
Join our community and experience Emerson College!

A Chaplain is a recognized faith leader who, together with the rest of the Spiritual Life team, supports the spiritual needs and religious practice of the Emerson community. The team of chaplains represents and serves diverse spiritual traditions and each brings a distinctive approach to spiritual counsel and leadership, in alignment with their own tradition and training.

In particular, this Part-time Chaplain and Muslim Advisor will serve as a spiritual mentor and resource for our Muslim students at Emerson College. This 8-10 hour/week position will be primarily responsible for coordinating and/or leading Jum'ah prayer (or other practice as needed), advising our Muslim Student Association group, and serving as a spiritual resource and support for the wider Emerson community.

Your responsibilities
  • Provide (at least) monthly opportunities for religious practice and observance of holy days for the campus community (students, faculty, staff) which may include services, sacred text study, and/or outings to nearby faith communities. Ensure widespread and inclusive publicity to the campus community to participate in these gatherings.

  • Serve as advisor to one Spiritual Life student organization: nurturing the development of its student leaders, assisting in the programming of the student group, building a culture of hospitality and inclusion amongst student participants, and assessing the needs of the group.

  • Provide individual counsel and spiritual support for Emerson community members both within and beyond one's own tradition, as needed. Provide compassionate and open-minded spiritual care for those across a wide spectrum of spiritual practice and identity.

  • Serve as an advocate for members of one's faith tradition: helping students and members of the Emerson community find the resources needed to practice their religion wholly as well as helping the college identify and meet the needs of each faith tradition.

  • As a member of the Center for Spiritual Life team, participate in periodic Center-wide interfaith events and attend (in person or virtually) twice/monthly staff meetings.

Your Other Responsibilities:

  • Spend at least one half-day (4-5 hours) on campus per week to lead an event, meet with student organization, and/or provide spiritual care. An additional 4-5 hours per week may be spent either on campus or off campus on online communications, outings, and planning.

  • Attend annual interfaith Unwind Retreat (one weekend overnight) each year for Emerson students.

  • Utilize EmConnect and social media to communicate events and offerings from your tradition and student group.

  • Meet biweekly with Director of Spiritual and Religious Life for one on one supervision.

  • Attend one event per month that is hosted by a different faith tradition or campus community.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Your Qualifications:
  • Ability to work independently, assess on-campus spiritual needs, and provide strategic leadership to meet those needs.
  • An inclusive and pluralistic approach to spiritual leadership: the incumbent must be able to work enthusiastically and compassionately with people from diverse backgrounds and the full range of spiritual practices/beliefs.
  • Chaplains must uphold the college's commitment to affirm, support, and uplift those from marginalized identities such as LGBTQIA+ individuals and people of color.
  • Must follow the highest ethical and moral conduct, and maintain a high level of integrity and avoid any inappropriate behavior with any member of the Emerson community.
  • Must be familiar with, and follow, the policies and procedures of the College.
  • Experience in planning and leading gatherings/services within one's faith tradition, particularly in the observance of holy days and important seasons.
  • A higher level of training or education in one's faith tradition

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in higher education is preferred.
  • Experience in chaplaincy.
  • Formal recognition as a leader from one's faith tradition is preferred.
