The Department of Theology & Philosophy at Mount Mary University invites applicants for the position of Assistant Professor of Philosophy to begin August 2022. The area of specialization is open, but desirable areas of expertise include (each broadly construed) History of Philosophy, Social and Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Gender, Philosophy of Race, Latin American or Latinx Philosophy, African/Africana Philosophy, Asian Philosophy, Indigenous or Native American Philosophy, and/or Environmental Philosophy. The successful candidate must also have a strong competency in the history of philosophy and ethics.

This full-time, tenure track appointment requires a 12-credit per semester teaching load. The successful candidate will teach cooperatively with a theologian in a joint-taught Core curriculum course, “Search for Meaning,” as well as a variety of philosophy courses from introductory general education classes to classes in the Philosophy major.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience working directly with students from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Experience with online instruction preferred.

Strong candidates will be versatile, committed teachers and scholars. Teaching experience and a PhD in Philosophy completed by the start date are required.

  • Teaching “Search for Meaning” and upper-level courses in Philosophy.
  • Active service to the department, University, and community.
  • Engage in scholarly activities that support and advance the profession, including publication and/or presentation.
  • Perform other duties, responsibilities, or special projects as assigned.

  • Outstanding verbal, writing, and presentation skills; must be able to communicate and interact effectively with Mount Mary students, employees, and alumnae.
  • Exceptional ability to multitask and prioritize projects.
  • Experience and understanding of current issues and developments in higher education.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to work with diverse groups, facilitate group process and foster collaborative decision-making.
