Department Summary
The School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) is an accredited research and professional school serving approximately 2,200 undergraduates and 100 graduate students both on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene and at the George S. Turnbull Center in Portland. Degrees offered are the BA, BS, MA, MS and Ph.D., as well as a minor in Media Studies. The school also supports the interdisciplinary major in Cinema Studies and interdisciplinary minors in Multimedia and Native Studies. The SOJC employs approximately 125 individuals as faculty and staff, over 50 graduate employees as well as roughly 50 student employees. The School is one of the oldest journalism programs in the nation, founded in 1916.
Position Summary
The Business Manager reports directly to the Associate Dean for SOJC Portland and is primarily responsible for managing all SOJC - Portland administrative, student services, and admissions operations. This position works closely with the Associate Dean for Portland, serving as the AD's primary policy and procedures advisor and acting as a delegate when authorized. This position coordinates with Portland faculty and staff to ensure facilities are set up for instructional needs and manages emergency preparedness operations.

This position coordinates equipment checkout room operations with faculty and staff to process upgrades, repair, initiating obsolescence procedures. This position also coordinates with the SOJC Business Office in Eugene in order to communicate purchasing, reimbursement, equipment fees/fines/penalties, and other transactional information. The Business Manager is also responsible for processing Concur travel reimbursements for all SOJC-Portland guest visitors as well as reimbursements for the Associate Dean.

The Business Manager provides support for admissions and student services workflows in Portland by communicating and coordinating terminal project defenses, sending out forms and reports, scheduling rooms for events, and providing general logistical and academic assistance for faculty and staff. This position works closely with the Graduate Affairs Office in Eugene to clearly and effectively communicate student service-related information in a timely manner.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a similar field or equivalent combination of skills, experience, and education.
  • Three years of budget management or accounting experience including expense reimbursements, accounts payable processing, and/or purchasing processes (credit card ordering & reconciliation, purchase orders, etc.)

  • Experience working in a higher education institution
  • Experience working with audio/visual equipment including film, photography, or virtual reality equipment
