Director of International Programs

The Virginia Military Institute invites applications for the position of Director of International Programs.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES:

 

  • Provide leadership for strategic planning, growth, and expansion of global engagement programs;
  • Provide leadership for developing/implementing outcomes assessment for continuous improvement;
  • Develop and implement strategic goals to increase student participation in study abroad programs including semester/exchange and faculty-led programs;
  • Manage existing and international institutional partnerships for faculty/student exchanges and educational experiences, including exchanges with foreign military academies;
  • Coordinate support for international students and scholars;
  • Promote and coordinate faculty and cadet access to international educational, research, and travel programs, including Olmsted, Fulbright, Gilman, and Boren;
  • Secure and administer grants to promote international education, currently including management of Project GO in partnership with the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures;
  • Serve as SEVP Principal Designated School Official and Responsible Officer;
  • Prepare and manage budgets; and
  • Manage professional staff and cadet employees.

 

This is a full-time 12-month Administrative and Professional Faculty position reporting to the Deputy Superintendent for Academics and Dean of the Faculty through the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Virginia Military Institute is a state-supported four-year undergraduate military college offering leading academic programs in the liberal arts, engineering, and the sciences. It is located in the southern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Lexington, Virginia (pop. 7,000), is also home to Washington & Lee University and offers a stimulating cultural atmosphere in a pleasant, rural setting. Staff wear uniforms but no prior military experience is required.

 

The position is available immediately and will remain open until filled.

 

The successful candidate will be prepared for periodic international travel in support of VMI’s international objectives/programs. 

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

The successful candidate will possess:

 

  • significant experience studying, conducting research, and/ or working abroad;
  • knowledge of the rules and regulations for international students on the F-1 visa and visiting scholars on the J-1 visa;
  • supervisory and crisis-management experience;
  • excellent problem-solving skills and judgment;
  • a working knowledge of risk management issues affecting study abroad and the ability to make appropriate and effective decisions in light of relevant professional standards and ethics, institutional policies and practices, and local, state, and federal laws and regulations;
  • the bearing and ability to work effectively with students, parents, faculty, staff and international visitors;
  • high energy to deal with multiple tasks;
  • budget management experience; and
  • strong interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills.

 

A master’s degree and at least 5 years of relevant professional experience are required. 

 

Preferred credentials:

 

  • Progressively increasing leadership experience in higher education;
  • Experience working in the field of international education in a small-college setting;
  • Experience working in a defined protocol environment with international visitors from the diplomatic, academic, and/or military communities for official, professional, academic and programmatic activities;
  • Experience in securing external support, grants, and scholarships.
