Job Summary

The Associate Director of Collection and Resource Services provides vision and expertise in the management, organization, and lifecycle of Georgia College's electronic and print resource collections. The Associate Director is responsible for continuing resources management, including identifying and resolving problems relating to complex electronic serials, databases, and subscriptions. The Associate Director manages issues related to licensing with a familiarity for how and for whom an organization licenses content, as well as the concepts, implications, and contract language pertaining to such issues as archival rights, perpetual access and interlibrary loan. The Associate Director maintains current high-level working knowledge of processing of print and electronic resources; identifies, evaluates and stays current with emerging trends, resources, practices and standards in electronic resource management, usage statistics, data management, access and discovery to enhance library services.

This 12-month position requires an ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library Science, with the experience and documented achievements appropriate for consideration of a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor.

Responsibilities

Administration -

Establishes policies and procedures for the efficient operation of the Collection and Resource Services Department, including all aspects of acquisitions, cataloging, continuing resources and database management and quality, and processing of materials; directs all major projects involving the management of the Continuing Resources collection, including receiving, processing, shelving, claiming, and binding

Faculty - Service to Institution -
Faculty contribute service to the institution. Examples include the following: Department, college, and university committee memberships and offices; planning and/or participating in programs, activities, and workshops; participation in special programs or projects and other service in the institution.

Faculty - Public Service -
Public Service is often a part of the service expectations and might include activities, such as the following: service to the profession, consulting work, membership and participation in community organizations and other significant services to the community.

Faculty - Teaching/Instructing -
Teaching and Instructional Responsibilities include actively soliciting, creating, and teaching information literacy instruction to support the students and the University's curriculum; and contributing to the Georgia College core curriculum by teaching information-literacy related first year (GC1Y) or sophomore seminar (GC2Y) courses. This position provides consultation services to students and faculty as assigned and creates and promotes instructional information such as bibliographies, service guides, web publications, subject-related research guides, etc. Participating in the library's collection development efforts by reviewing, selecting, and making recommendations for the purchase of library materials that support the curriculum is also required of this position.

Liaison -
Provides consultation and education to faculty and students on copyright, open access services, and resources, open access licenses and publishing alternatives; helps administrators, faculty, and students understand the role of the institutional repository as a scholarly communication tool and assists in content recruitment.

Budgeting -
Collaborates with department members to plan the department budget; administers the department budget; assists and advises the Library Director and Library Management Council in monitoring other library budgets and expenditures and makes recommendations that identify materials, equipment, supplies, personnel, and other needs.

Leadership -
Maintains and communicates awareness of emerging issues, ongoing developments and technologies to the Library Director and Library Management Council, including strategic planning and the establishment of goals and objectives; provides leadership in the attainment of goals and objectives for the department and supervises their implementation; advocates for fair terms and pricing, open access, new models of shared access, and content preservation; maintains a commitment to Open Access publications as they relate to the curriculum; maintains a knowledge of the Library's services, locations, personnel and policies and recommends changes/guidelines as appropriate; Directs all major projects involving the management of the Continuing Resources collection; works collaboratively with other library departments on issues such as collection development, interlibrary loan, course reserves, library technology and the library's web site.

Supervision -
Recruits, recommends for hire, trains, coaches, supports, supervises, and evaluates faculty, staff, and student assistants; makes recommendations regarding faculty reappointment, tenure, and promotion; handles personnel actions/decisions based on applicable policy, procedures, and practices; mentors faculty and staff

Other -
Oversees the content management of the library's databases, electronic journals, and e-books; maintains a conceptual and practical knowledge of standards, protocols, and structures (RDA, naming authority, Dublin Core, METS, MODS, etc.) specifically those which govern open models of access and content preservation (OAI PMH, ORCID, etc.)
Experience managing databases, electronic journals, e-books; Knowledge of open access models; Knowledge of and experience with emerging digital preservation techniques and technology

Management -
Coordinates the purchasing, licensing, and access of electronic resources and print serial publications with an understanding of issues such as copyright and fair use in order to obtain the least restrictive, most library-friendly licensing terms during publisher/vendor license negotiations.
Knowledge of the publishing industry and trends; experience negotiating with vendors. Knowledge of copyright and licensing. Knowledge of and experience with licensing electronic resources. Knowledge of copyright principles. Experience with answering questions related to fair use.

Faculty - Professional Development -
Remains professionally active in their area of expertise; maintains an expert knowledge of recent advances or trends in librarianship and related fields through reading, training, networking, attending conferences, workshops, etc., or other means of development/personal growth.

Faculty - Scholarship and Creative Activity -
As a member of the faculty, participates in planning, researching, writing, and publishing in areas of expertise; participates in professional organizations; plans and/or participates in programs, activities, and workshops; seeks external sources of funding and submits grant proposals.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

Other Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of cataloging standards, practices, and authority control
  • Working knowledge of metadata standards such as Dublin Core, METS, or MODS
  • Working knowledge of and experience with an institutional repository, open education resources and copyright
  • Demonstrated exceptional written and oral communication skills; ability to present complex information diverse user groups.
  • Required Experience
    Three years of demonstrated experience:
  • Leading projects, committees, workgroups, etc.
  • Working collaboratively with other library departments on services such as interlibrary loan and course reserves
  • Providing supervision to departmental employees, including hiring, training, coaching and evaluating
  • Managing electronic serials, databases, and subscriptions
  • Working with access and identity management or proxy server tools (e.g., OpenAthens, EZProxy)
  • Working with an integrated library system (ILS) in a shared environment
  • Working with vendors of print and electronic resources
  • Planning and administering library budgets
  • Training or informing end-users or decision-makers in using or understanding library resources
  • Participating in library projects, such as large-scale weeding or collection analysis projects
  • Providing reference and/or information literacy instruction to students
  • Working with individuals from diverse backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years of demonstrated experience supervising professional librarians and library staff, managing electronic serials, databases, and subscriptions, working with an integrated library system (ILS), working with vendors of print and electronic resources, managing library budget, training or informing end-users or decision-makers in using or understanding library resources, participating in library projects, such as large-scale weeding or collection analysis projects
  • Experience using the ExLibris Alma Integrated Library System
  • Experience working in a consortial library
  • Experience using the bepress Digital Commons Institutional Repository
  • Knowledge of and experience with Open Educational Resources
  • Experience conducting workflow analysis
  • Experience providing information literacy instruction to students and faculty
