The Department of Health and Movement Sciences invites applications for a full time, tenure track position as a core faculty member within the Physical Education Teacher Education Program to begin August 2022.  The mission of the Department of Health and Movement Sciences is to provide exemplary graduate and undergraduate education in health and fitness. As a broad and diverse department, Health and Movement Sciences is committed to educating and developing leaders and practitioners in the areas of athletic training, exercise science, health science, human performance, physical education, respiratory care, school health education, and sport studies to benefit the public. Our Physical Education program has recently undergone several revisions to meet professional standards and to enhance the education experience for its students. Part of this revision is the development of an accelerated BS Physical Education to MS School Health Education 4+1 program. 

Brief Description of Duties/Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities will be teaching within the university’s Physical Education program in courses assigned by the Chairperson of the Department of Health and Movement Sciences in consultation with the Program Coordinators of the Physical Education program. This includes teaching undergraduate courses in the areas of physical education pedagogy, adapted physical education, motor learning, fundamental skills, individual and team sports, curriculum development, and/or other areas to support the department and program mission. Additional responsibilities will include: supervising student teachers and internship students at the elementary and secondary levels; engaging in scholarly activity through publications, presentations, grant writing and/or research; providing professional service to the department, school, university and profession; and advising undergraduate students. 

Required Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate or ABD in Physical Education or closely related field. *ABD candidates are encouraged to apply and should make clear what progress they have made on their dissertation. 
  • Teaching experience that aligns with the current Physical Education curriculum. 
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to engage in meaningful scholarship/creative activity, leading to presentations at professional meetings and publications in peer-reviewed journals in the disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications 

Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate evidence of teaching experience at both public school and college levels: 

  • evidence of experience supervising interns and/or student teachers in Health and Physical Education;  
  • evidence of scholarly competence through publications, presentations, research and/or obtaining grants;  
  • the ability to work and interact successfully with students and colleagues;  
  • and evidence of student-centered, caring practices for students. 

Additional preferred qualifications include evidence of a commitment to diversity and the ability to utilize technology in the classroom.  The ability to teach courses in the areas of adapted physical education, motor learning, motor development, and pedagogy are strongly preferred. Candidates with working knowledge of accreditation practices and policies, and a willingness to assume leadership role(s) in response to future department needs are strongly preferred.
