Southern Illinois University Carbondale School of Journalism is seeking an outstanding media professional and teacher in photojournalism to join its photojournalism faculty at the rank of assistant professor beginning August 16, 2022. This is a tenure-track position.

The School of Journalism seeks to add a diversity of experiences and viewpoints to an outstanding full-time faculty of committed teachers and scholars. The School features modern computer-equipped classrooms, operates an MS program for media professionals, and participates in master's and doctoral degree programs in the College of Arts and Media. The hundred-year-old school newspaper, The Daily Egyptian, is located within the School and is coordinating its work with River Region Evening Edition, a student-produced TV news program that is broadcast on WSIU, a PBS affiliate. The two news organizations will move into a new converged newsroom that will break ground in 2022. The School also publishes the Gateway Journalism Review, one of only two journalism journals in the country.

Opportunities are available to mentor Daily Egyptian and River Region Evening Edition students as well as alt.news students who produce documentaries. The Carbondale campus has an enrollment of about 11,000 and ranks among the top institutions for producing minority graduates. It is located in picturesque and highly livable southern Illinois.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach classes in such areas as Basic Photojournalism, Advanced Photojournalism, Picture Story, Photo Editing, Reporting, Writing, and/or Newsroom Management.
  • Conduct creative work or research that will build a dossier for promotion and tenure.
  • Provide service to the School including advising student organizations such as the Daily Egyptian, River Region Evening Edition, and alt.news.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD, MFA or Master's degree
  • 10 or more years of professional media experience in photojournalism.  Professional media experience will be broadly construed to encompass those activities which served to advance the discipline from traditional scholarship to creative activity of a high-caliber produced in the practice of journalism.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given those applicants who l) have published photojournalism on a national level, 2) have a record of research or creative activities, 3) have new media and/or reporting skills that enable them to both report and illustrate stories, 4) have a record of excellence in teaching or a demonstrated aptitude for teaching, or 5) have a record of working with student journalists on news projects in a newsroom setting.
