Position Details

Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job
The Family Medicine faculty member will assist the Chair in development of clinical content in the curriculum, participate in scholarship and research in the department, provide quality patient care in the faculty practice, and foster collaboration and interdisciplinary learning. Members of the Department will be expected to participate in teaching in the systems courses, physical exam course, case-based learning sessions, preparation for clerkships, procedural skills training, Osteopathic Principles and Practice, and OSCE’s as needed. Full time members of the department will also participate in the SHSU faculty clinical practice and provide clinic-based teaching. The individuals should be comfortable working in preclinical and clinical education, as well as in the evaluation of curriculum and students through various learning and assessment methods. The ideal candidate should have strong clinical and procedural skills as well as computer skills.

Serves the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine ( SHSU - COM ), in the Department of Primary Care and Clinical Medicine. The position reports to the Department Chair. The College of Osteopathic Medicine is currently in pre-accreditation status and its inaugural class began in August 2020 and will be eligible for full accreditation once its first class is graduated. SHSU is focused on underserved communities, primary care and other specialties identified as a physician workforce shortage in the State of Texas. SHSU - COM has developed an integrated curriculum merging basic science instruction with clinical learning with an osteopathic emphasis. Educational Requirements for the Position
The successful candidate will have a DO or MD degree from an accredited college of medicine with residency training in Family Medicine, current AOA or ABMS board certification and eligibility for, or a current license to practice in Texas.

DO is preferred, but not required. Experience Required for the Position
A background in medical education is preferred, as is experience in pre-clinical and clinical teaching and well-developed communication skills. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and training. Other Requirements for the Position
Ability to communicate and work with faculty, medical students, clerkship coordinators, hospital administrators, physician preceptors and college administration. Excellent written and verbal communication. Demonstrates personal initiative and abilities to deal with a rapidly changing environment. Familiar with Learning Management Systems and reporting. Other duties as assigned.
