The James H. Oliver, Jr., Institute for Coastal Plain Science (ICPS) in the College of Science and Mathematics invites applications and nominations for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor of Environmental Science.

Within this setting, the Institute for Coastal Plain Science (ICPS) facilitates interdisciplinary research and education directed toward understanding the physical and biological resources occurring below the fall line and their sustainable use and management. Supporting Georgia Southern University's pursuit of academic distinction in teaching, scholarship, and service, the ICPS advances a culture of engagement that bridges theory with practice and extends the learning environment beyond the classroom. The ICPS pursues its mission through a diverse group of affiliated faculty from across departments within the College of Science and Mathematics.
Position Description. Reporting to the Director of the ICPS, the Assistant Professor of Environmental Science requires research, teaching, and service responsibilities as well as a doctoral degree in Environmental Science, one of the Natural Sciences, or a related field. This position is part of a new environmental science initiative and will contribute to a growing Sustainability Science BS program as well as newly approved MS and PhD programs in Environmental Science. The successful candidate will develop a high-impact, externally funded research program in any area of environmental science (broadly defined) that will complement existing research strengths in southeastern US coastal and/or aquatic ecosystems. In addition to contributing to the new BS, MS, and PhD programs, the successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the area of expertise. The position is an academic 10-month tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Required Qualifications:
- Earned doctorate in Environmental Science, one of the Natural
Sciences, or a closely related field by August 1, 2022.
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing a strong and growing
research and scholarship agenda and the production of
research/creative activities as appropriate to the
discipline.
- Strong potential to attract extramural funding, especially
funding that supports graduate students in Environmental Science
and other scientific disciplines.
- Ability to teach courses at multiple levels in the
undergraduate Sustainability Science and graduate Environmental
Science curricula.
- Willingness to engage with institutional student success
initiatives.
- Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in
instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and
development.
Preferred Qualifications: - Postdoctoral research experience or similar post-graduate
professional experience.
- Ability to conduct interdisciplinary research in southeastern
coastal and/or aquatic ecosystems.
- Student-centered research and/or teaching experience.
Conditions of Employment: - Must be authorized to work in the United States for the
duration of employment without assistance from the
institution.
- All work (with limited exceptions such as research and study
abroad and outside activities such as grading and email
correspondence) for Georgia Southern University must be completed
while the employee is physically present in the state of Georgia,
unless specifically authorized by the university for a specific
purpose and limited period of time within current
policy.
- Faculty are expected to contribute to the vibrant university
community by engaging students, participating in events, and
performing other responsibilities on-campus.
- Faculty may be required to teach, conduct research, or perform
service duties on any of the three campuses. Georgia Southern
provides accessible transportation options between campuses.
