This position may include a combination of day, evening, weekend and extension site assignments. It may also include a combination teaching modalities, including face-to-face, online, and hybrid instruction. Southwestern Community College District (SCCD) is seeking a full-time, tenure track, equity-focused faculty member committed to serving its' culturally diverse student population. THE COLLEGESouthwestern Community College District is a single college district providing higher education in Chula Vista, San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, National City and Coronado. SCCD's strategic south San Diego County locations position the College to provide exceptional service to a binational community on the U.S.-Mexico International Border. SCCD is one of 20 initial California Guided Pathways colleges and is known for its excellent learning communities. Southwestern Community College District seeks faculty who value mentorship and working in a collegial, collaborative environment, guided by a commitment to helping all students achieve their educational goals. RESPONSIBILITIES: This position reports to the Dean of the School of Language, Literature, and Humanities. This tenure-track position requires a candidate with a strong pedagogical background in English for Academic Purposes (EAP), the ability to teach ESL students of all levels, and a mastery of materials design, including for online instruction. In particular, experience with advanced ESL academic writing is preferred. The basic assignment will consist of teaching with a learner- and learning-centered approach and designing teaching and learning materials and tools that are aligned with research-based pedagogies and that seamlessly weave technology into the fabric of lessons. The assignment will also consist of designing pedagogically sound, equity-oriented curriculum and assessment. Peer evaluations and peer mentoring; collaboration with colleagues; participation in meetings, projects, and committees; service to the college; participation in shared governance; and professional learning are also required duties for this position.

Knowledge and Abilities:
1. Subject matter preparation: a. Required experience in teaching English as a second language or foreign language classes. (e.g. ESL, ESOL, ELAC, ELD, EAL)b. Desired experience teaching and materials design both for face-to-face and online classes.c. Desired experience in teaching advanced writing (i.e. composition). 2. Evidence of ability and effectiveness as a faculty member: a. Understanding of the role and purpose of the community college.b. Commitment to collegiality and collaboration by working as a team with faculty and staff enhancing instruction, curriculum, and student success as well as in the planning of class schedules and teaching rotations.c. Commitment to professional responsibilities and associations outside of the classroom through contributions to the department, division and college activities (e.g. committees and departmental tasks and projects). 3. Evidence of ability and effectiveness an instructor: a. Ability to evaluate one’s pedagogy and its effectiveness in facilitating student learning.b. Sensitivity to, and respect for, a rich and diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological and ethnic backgrounds, those with diverse gender expression and those with disabilities. c. Ability to use culturally responsive pedagogy that engages racially, ethnically, academically, and culturally diverse students, promoting critical thinking and emphasizing cooperation and collaboration amongst these students.d. Knowledge and practice that supports learner- and learning-centered, self-reflective approaches which include a wide range of educational delivery systems and asset-based thinking.e. Ability to design and teach face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online courses effectively.f. Ability to design effective, equity-based assessment tools (e.g. prompts and rubrics) and provide meaningful, asset-based feedback.

Education and Experience:


Minimum Qualifications: (Faculty and Academic Administrator Positions Only)
Master’s degree in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or education with a TESL emphasis OR Bachelor’s in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND Master’s degree in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or any foreign language OR possession of a valid California Community College Instructor Credential in ESL OR the equivalent.

Desirable Qualifications:
Knowledge and demonstrated experience with current research-based pedagogies, instructional strategies, current methodologies and technologies used in language acquisition, Content-Based Instruction; background and experience in a bilingual/bicultural environment; proficiency in a language other than English and/or experience learning a language other than English. Experience working in a community with a similar diversity pattern as is found in the service area for Southwestern College. Candidates must exhibit an appreciation of, a sensitivity to, and respect for a rich and diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological and ethnic backgrounds, and those with disabilities. Experience working in a community with a similar diversity pattern as is found in the service area for Southwestern College is desirable.

Salary
Upon initial employment, full-time faculty members are placed on the salary schedule based upon years of experience and education.  Initial salary placement for experience can range from $55,070.00-$82,863.00 per year.  Faculty members are encouraged to continue their professional development through additional study qualifying them for advancement on the salary schedule.  For the current salary schedule and information on salary placement visit our website atwww.swccd.edu  Benefits include a choice of medical plans, dental coverage, vision, sick leave and an optional tax deferred flexible benefit plan.  Coverage is offered for employees and all eligible dependents.  Academic employees participate in the State Teachers’ Retirement System, a defined-benefit retirement plan through the State of California.
