About the Position

The Department of Art and Art History at Western Washington University (WWU) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Art and Museum Education, to begin Fall 2022. Salary is commensurate with experience. Candidates must be qualified to teach K-12 standards and methods courses with up-to-date pedagogical approaches and strategies derived from global contemporary art practice and theory. The successful candidate will design courses which introduce art education pedagogy and best practices across institutional platforms, offering critical frameworks and practical knowledge for art education in classrooms, museums, and nontraditional spaces, and for working with communities of different ages, abilities, and backgrounds.  

The Assistant Professor of Art and Museum Education will be prepared to engage with topics such as: philosophies of art education; developmental and experiential learning; audience diversity and inclusivity; public program development; integrating new technologies; and the role of the arts in community engagement. We seek a candidate who is well-versed in contemporary and historic pedagogical issues and practices related to visual culture to enhance the museum studies minor. This faculty will also participate in advising and university, college, and departmental service and faculty governance. Responsibilities:

  • Develop and teach courses that facilitate creative hands-on integrations of art and museum practice and pedagogy with general education.
  • Update curriculum and prepare students for teacher certification with an Art endorsement in the state of Washington.
  • Design and teach Museum Education courses, sharing coordination and advising for the Museum Studies minor. 
  • Coordinate student advisement for Art Education
  • Maintain an active program for your teaching/scholarship and creative activity/service. 
  • Participate in university, college, and departmental committee work and governance activities.
