Assistant Professor of Game Narrative Department of English

Kennesaw State University is now accepting applications for a nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Game Narrative faculty position in the Department of English to begin August 2022.

The current teaching load is 3/3 with ongoing research and creative activity and university service. Faculty in the Department teach in a variety of modalities, including face-to-face, hybrid, and online.

Applicants will have the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses such as Interactive Narrative and Games (WRIT 3125) and graduate courses for the MA in Professional Writing. In addition, applicants should be prepared to contribute to departmental efforts to develop curriculum and programs related to gaming and game studies, including a graduate certificate in writing for the creative industries and an MFA in Screenwriting. Related areas of interest include: composition, electronic literature, games studies, game writing, interactive fiction, media studies, linguistics, literacy studies, rhetoric, screenwriting, and writing studies.

A PHD or MFA,, or a foreign equivalent, in English, Creative Writing, Game Studies, or a closely related field is required.

The Department of English seeks a collaborative and collegial teacher-scholar who specializes in game-based narrative. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of 1) game development processes and 2) theoretical/critical practices at the intersection of critical making, diverse and inclusive game design, gaming cultures, transmedia narrative and storytelling, and worldbuilding. We will consider a broad range of qualified candidates from industry and the academy.

Strong applicants should have a clear and well-developed agenda for their scholarship and/or creative activity that combines theory and practice (with an emphasis on creative application) reflective of the promotion and tenure expectations at a “high research activity” institution.

KSU’s student population is as diverse as the population of the Atlanta metro area and includes a high proportion of traditionally underrepresented groups and first-generation college students.

We prefer candidates who share the Department of English’s explicit commitment to teaching diverse communities and our belief that our diversity is our strength. Individuals from historically underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants with experience emphasizing issues related to diversity, inclusion, and social equity, particularly of historically marginalized groups, in game narrative, inter- and trans-disciplinary collaboration, and augmented-/virtual-/mixed-reality technologies are also encouraged to apply.

For more than 50 years, Kennesaw State University has been known for its entrepreneurial spirit and sense of community. Offering campuses in Marietta and Kennesaw, the university is located just north of Atlanta and combines a suburban setting with access to one of the country’s most
